BT launches 'free' Wi-Fi mobile appBT Fon app allows Total Broadband customers with an iPhone or Android phone to connect to the nearest Wi-Fi hotspot for free
---
BT has launched a mobile app for broadband customers that automatically connects their iPhone and Android mobiles to free, unlimited Wi-Fi.

The BT FON app, which is only available to BT Total Broadband customers, notifies users of the nearest Wi-Fi hot spots. Users then enter their BT internet email username and password, and can choose to be automatically logged in whenever they are in a BT Wi-Fi area.

Because access is unlimited and free for BT Total Broadband customers, this prevents them racking up extra costs on their mobile phone bill. BT FON and BT Openzone currently has 1.6m Wi-Fi hot spots worldwide.
---
iPhone users can download the application from the app store (search for BT Fon) or by typing http://****/iPhoneBTFon into the iPhone's browser. Android users can download the application from the Android Market (search for BT Fon) or by typing http://****/AndroidBTFon into their browser. BBC's Children in Need appeal will receive 50p for each of the first 20,000 times the application is downloaded.

At one time you could only get BT FON if you agreed to open up your broadband router at home to other BT FON users. Is this still the case?

cheers

Cheers, great ap, love the maps showing hotspots, can't wait to see how whether coverage is as good as map seems to promise

Nice, thanks!

Does anyone have any feedback on use of this app? Thanks

I cannot remember my bt email address and password, any help....

I've used this to log into a BT Openzone hotspot but have never been sufficiently close to a BT Fon one (except my own so pointless) to try it there.

I believe it's true that you have to be opted in to BT Fon to get your free minutes. All BT Broadband customers get unlimited minutes now I believe.

It's useful because it automates the login bit. This means that you don't need to load up a browser page and fill in your details there. Obviously the locating bit is of limited use on an iPod Touch because you need a connection to view the maps in the first place.

I previously used a paid for app that does the same job.

Is there anything on the BT web site? If not, the helpline is 08001114567. You're likely to be asked for your BT account number before they reset it for you.

cis_groupie yes that is the case. I recently signed up to the scheme and the operator told me that new BT broadband customers are automaticly signed up as of 2008 or thereabouts.Prior to this, it is was voluntary.

You need OS4 or above for this to work I'm not ready to risk my 3G with that yet.

Still, a great app and an excellent service from BT.

Risk what

this is pretty cool
