BT Smart Talk - make phone calls from your mobile and pay landline prices.

Basically - anyone with a BT phone line can use this. Download/install the app and you make phone calls through it anywhere in the world with an internet connection (be it wifi, 3g or 4g). When you do, you are charged through your landline, as though you made the call from your living room.

For example, you are on the unlimited calls package,
You're on holiday in the US.
You go to McDonalds for a supersize bigmac meal and you fancy calling home. Connect to the free wi-fi and make the call from the app. you're then on the phone for 45 mins. you pay nothing.
This works anywhere in the world, be it at your friends house, in town. anywhere. This can also be used to make cheap calls to 0800 numbers (which are usually included in your BT calls package).

Link is to the iOS version

but there's also an android version at the play store

The most impossible company in the World to deal with. I'll pay mobile prices and not suffer the frustration of trying to deal with BT.
Why are people voting this cold? Is there a catch? Please feel free to comment.

Okay, not everyone can use this (I'm not on BT so it's no good for me), but I can see why it would be useful to anyone who is, so have some heat from me.
I've been using this on a trial basis and it works fine. It uses whatever call charges would be applicable to using your home landline, so free if on anytime inclusive calls and free on evening and weekend calls package. Just watch if you are overseas for the time difference.
Don't see why anyone would vote cold. Looks like a useful service so I've signed up for it and voted hot. Thanks for posting OP.
...or there's viber.
Downloaded and eay to set upworks. I will get my kids to use on their pay as you go phones. a s a have a anytime call package it is great value.
It's getting cold votes because it's from BT. Any other company offering this app and it'd be red hot.
Would be useful if i didn't have free minutes anyway and also for any 08 numbers i just use WEQ4U and get them free in my minutes. Heat anyway it will be useful for some people
Voted hot. Easy set up, and works great. To many idiots on here voting things cold just because it's a big company, you then have to ignore the voting and make up your own mind.
good app if you are on bt means I can buy a lower package on my mobile
I have an anytime call plan and a pay as you go mobile so is great news for me. Easy to install and set up.
I have a BT Broadband package which gives me the any time call plan. I also have a T-Mobile Vivacity with costs just £6/month and which gives me unlimited 3G access over the two year contract period but only allows me 30 minutes 'free' minutes per month.
The Smart Talk app is brilliant for people like me because I can now use my mobile as if I'm ringing from my home land line without eating into my meagre free minutes allowance. Although the app works best over a wi-fi network, it also works over 3G so as long at I can get a signal, I can make the call!
Well done BT. I voted hot for this one.
Just tried to download BT Smart Talk to my old T-Mobile Pulse. Download worked but not the app. Probably didn't work either because it's Android 2.1 or not enough memory. Shame.
thanks will give it a go
Hot from me if this works as I hope it will, when we're in the bar in Spain with wifi, we can call home for free?
Win if you ask me, so thanks for the heads up.
im in Australia atm with BT full package at home.

See no.2 in the list.
How the app works:
1. Please note: this app is available to BT customers only!
2. Download the app and complete the sign-up journey; you’ll need to be at home to link your mobile with your home phone and complete your registration.
3. The BT account holder will be informed of all new registrations and has the ability to manage and block all users.
4. The BT account holder can manage their BT SmartTalk service online at bt.com/myb…alk and up to 4 additional household users, including limiting the type of number each user can call.
5. You’ll also need an internet connection! You can make calls over Wi-Fi, whether at home or out-and-about, or using a 3G/4G connection – Wi-Fi is best as your mobile service provider may charge you for data usage.
6. Please note that call quality is dependent on the quality of your Wi-Fi or mobile data connection – BT SmartTalk will warn you by displaying a message if your signal strength is poor. Problems connecting? Run the ‘Connection Test’ in the ‘Help’ section of the app.
7. Calls made from this app will cost the same as from your home phone, using your BT calling plan rather than your mobile rates or minutes.
8. People will see your mobile number when you call them via the app rather than your home phone number.
9. You’ll see all BT SmartTalk calls itemised by user mobile number on your BT bill, including calls made outside of your home calling plan.
10. For more information on your BT home calling plan, you’ll need to ask the BT account holder.

fantastic little app. I'm on payg so great being able to use my home line inclusive minutes, bonus being able to make cheap 0800/0845 numbers (real annoyance for me on mobile). Looking forward to cheap calls when abroad also!

Voted Hot. Useful for when abroad, and also for my children at university for when thy need to call 0800 or 0845 numbers (which would otherwise be charged on their mobiles).
I hate bt I hate paying them so much especially since my wifi is so slow we can walk faster but I do have to say this is very handy as I have a samba sim in my iPad and we have the full bt anytime package so for once maybe I don't hate bt ( quite so much )
cool find m8 heat added

so can you use this if you just know someone (or a relative) with a BT phone ?
Can you use it to call your own home phone? E.g. Call your misses at home?

I'd never heard of WEQ4U. Thanks! I'm not on BT, so this app could be really useful.
BT have just increased their line rental to about £15 a month too.
This is a brilliant app! It's really good!
Thanks very much. Will this work in a Blackberry ?

Yep! And all 5 users can make calls at the same time.
Would you be charged if calling a mobile number?
This is smoking hot ... it's free and quite honestly it's amazing. Good stuff.
Surely this should be red hot, it's a free app that saves the users significant money, how can some people vote this cold ? heat from me anyway.
just had a go im in vegas works well calling UK while in the casino for free

It will be the same price as if you'd called from your bt landline, plus a spy network charges for data if they apply
Disappointed that they're disallowing SmartTalk sign-ups for customers with a BT line, but using Carrier Pre-Selection to have landline calls billed by a third party. :-(
Just found out yesterday why my daughter couldn't use it she's got a tmobile iPhone 4 sim and they block that type of use, don't know the tech about it but it certainly won't work on her 3G at school,:/
B.T. Phooooone hooome. Lovely stuff. Thanks for sharing.
I tried this yesterday and spent 26 mins on my mobile and it was a perfect call.
