BT Sport for Free????

Found 18th Jun 2015
You now have to downgrade your BT Sport to get it at the bargain price of £0.

If you have BT sport which you have been getting for nothing by having broadband they will be charging £5 per month if you do not cancel or downgrade or do nothing - This is because they now have the champions league.

They are only telling you by email which may go into spam so you wont know until you get the bill!

0800 432 0025 is a shorter wait for BT customer services

Nope, I got a letter informing about the change this week - either pay £5/month or sign up for a new 12 month contract to carry on getting it for free.

I have had 3 calls for someone working on behalf of bt offering me to sign up for new contract,I went on live chat and they said I don't have to

I've only been with BT for 5 months and got the email to say it will be chargeable from August so planned to cancel but what's the downgrade option then?

BT Sport Europe (their new channel with all 351 Champions and Europa League games) will cost £5 per month to existing BT Broadband customers or completely free to BTTV customers.

If you do not want this European football channel then you can continue to get BT Sport Lite (BT Sport 1 including Premiership) free of charge whilst you remain in their broadband contract.

Quote from the email - If you do nothing, your BT Sport Pack will cost £5 a month from 1 August 2015.

Yes, because that's the price for the pack with the new channel. If you do not want the European games then you need to downgrade to BT Sport Lite.

Downgrade to sports lite link is here, but be sure to opt out of entering a new 12 month contract:- productsandservices.bt.com/pro…tml

The sports lite channel will still show premiership games but it will not include the fa cup so it's a downgrade from what was available previously, my contract with them is up in a few months so I probably will be going with someone else for my broadband

Im watching England U21 on BT Sport for free on Kodi

Thanks for the link melted.

And they have dropped Moto GP on the Lite package. You really cant trust BT, goodness knows what will happen to EE TV when the ink is dry after the takeover is completed?

Anyone know if they keep tabs on the BTTV box ie where it's plugged in? Could it be plugged in elsewhere?

cheers hadnt heard anything about this

Do you think its a charity BT are running then? They pay for the champions league rights so viewers pay for it too, just the same as anyone paying for Skysports used to

But did skysports price go down when they lost the rights and didnt have to pay for the rights? course it didnt they put the price UP , so if anything its Sky you cant trust

They sent me out a letter last Friday. If you downgrade you will get BT sport light free until the end of your current contract. You can renew for 12 months to get it free for a further 12 months but you don't have to.

If you don't pay £5 per month then you will miss out on the following sports:
UEFA Champions League
UEFA Europa League
The FA Cup
European Rugby Champions Cup
MotoGP
Ultimate Fighting Championship
Edited by: "chris88" 18th Jun 2015

And can you just take the BTTV box and not use it - and just watch it all on sky?

There's a difference between a charity and a trustworthy business. BT isn't either.

BT got me to stay with them a few months ago on the basis of a reduced price still including BT Sport and MotoGP. I'm now tied into a contract with them, but they've changed what they're offering me - mid MotoGP season. An utter con, and I'm surprised they can get away with it.

Yep I'm most annoyed about the MotoGP too, curious about taking them up on their free tvbox and just not using it too. I don't have a freeview aerial.

But subscribers should get the choice to upgrade to champions league, not be expected to pay extra unless they contact BT to downgrade. There will be tens if not hundreds of thousands of subscribers who pay the extra £5pm without even knowing they've been charged and don't even watch champions league football and BT know this, which is why they are doing it this way.

If you want BT Sport Europe on your Sky box instead of your BTTV box then it will cost you £5. It is only free on BTTV.

If you have broadband only it seems to get access to the BT europe channel is £5 a month, but you can take BT TV for £0 a month and a one-off £35 and the channel for free.

Again, makes no sense (why sub for £60/year when you can get it for a one-off £35?).

A contract is a contract!
You have the right to cancel if anything is changed from your original contract you signed, thats the whole point of a contract..
Changing something mid contract is a no no, and they are only getting away with it because the general public are letting them..

Depends if you want to watch it on BTTV (for free), or via Sky (costs £5 if a BT Broadband customer). If not a BT Broadband/BTTV customer then you will not be able to watch BT Sport Europe on Sky.

"BT Broadband contract" being the operative words, no BT Sport contract. BT Broadband customers in contract will still get BT Sport 1 (includes Premiership) for free. The cost of £5 is for the new sports pack which includes the new BT Sport Europe channel.

If you want to watch Champions League live you currently have to be a BT customer. BT Sport has exclusive rights for the next 3 seasons.

Utter nonsense, the "operative words" are the entire sentence - which includes "to keep getting BT Sport for free". BT Sport Lite is *NOT* BT Sport, it is a cut down service which is not what I was told I would get when I phoned and committed to a 12 month contract. You can try to say as much otherwise as you like (and I don't know why you are).

If you are that concerned then why don't you phone them with the grievance about your 'BT Broadband' contract.

They have supplied BT Sport free for 2 seasons and will continue to supply BT Sport 1 free for season 3 whilst you are in a BT Broadband contract. The new BT Sport Europe channel will also be completely free for BTTV customers or £5 per month for just BT Broadband customers. Personally, (even at £5) I think this is a great deal for football fans to get access to ALL 351 Champions and Europa League games, and before you ask, no I don't work for BT but do my homework as a football fan.

It's a terrible deal for those who don't care about Champions League games, and just want what they were promised (i.e. in this case, the other half of the MotoGP season).

The point is I shouldn't be forced to contact them, and even if I do, they're still taking away what they promised me. Trying to excuse these kind of practices is just nonsense.

Worth noting HD pack is going up as well, from £3 to £4 extra a month. Annoying they charge extra for HD, especially now 4k is here, I'd hope they'd pass the charge onto that and have HD free as standard but no.

If that's the case, I think you should complain that it is a material change to your contract with them, and unless they relent, that you expect to be released from it at no cost to yourself.

Not a fan of the source, but also see:-
moneysavingexpert.com/new…ise Q. I'm in contract on my BT broadband. Does the hike mean I can cancel the broadband penalty-free?

I think there are MotoGP highlights on ITV4?

When I I checked mine directly via my account it said "you have BT Sport Lite" and "There's nothing else you need to do" - so doesn't appear that everyone is being automatically put on the £5 a month package (although it gives me the option to upgrade).

Ah looking at Moneysavingexpert:

"Q. I've just been downgraded to Sport Lite. I thought everyone gets upgraded to the full BT Sport Pack?

A. BT confirms it is aware that some customers do not watch BT Sport often so they will be put on BT Sport Lite, rather than being opted in to the £5/month full BT Sport Pack."

Since I've watched BT Sport...em..never... that explains it.
Edited by: "Alansmithee" 19th Jun 2015

If you are unhappy with the BT sport changes, as I am...you need to phone BT to explain to them you are unhappy at being asked to downgrade your account and get one sport channel instead of three. if you are unable to reach an agreement with them, then citizens advice will advise you to request 'a letter of deadlock' which you then go to the telecommunications ombudsman with and they will then decide the outcome which could result in you being let out of your contract....which obviously BT don't want. But be persistent BT want you to think that you have no rights and have to just accept it....which you don't.

Interesting. I have went down the 'misleading marketing' route as I only signed up in May. They advertised btsport as the only place to watch European football and could show me other price increases on there summary. They have forwarded my complaint on and I've requested all marketing information from the sign up date. See what happens. I'm portraying hassle so hopefully I won't need to complain to telecommunications ombusdman. But I will.
