BT will make some matches available for everyone to watch, whether a subscriber or not, via a new, free-to-air channel on digital TV.

Called BT Sport Showcase, this channel will show a minimum of 12 UEFA Champions League matches and 14 UEFA Europa League matches and these will be available to anyone to watch for free. Each participating British team will be shown at least once.

not a deal tho, thanks for posting, just wrong section

Balls to football.!!

I don't have BT TV.
But, that's great news about Gary Lineker presenting the CL show.
Hopefully, that means he won't be presenting Match of the Day

You don't need BT TV for these, they will be free to air on any freeview/digital TV.

he just signed a new 5 year contract!

Well done BT. Sky Sports would never do this.

I think they had to do it as part of the deal to be honest. Don't think they would have been allowed exclusive rights if they didn't make some games free.
Think us non subscription tv people will still end up worse off because they might not show as many games as itv did and I doubt it will be in HD either.

probably won't be the English teams games. plus people with BT broadband who get free BT sports now have to pay an extra £5 just to watch the European matches. not happy

BT are going to have a 4K channel too.

Keep Lineker for MOTD, despite the fact I'm not his biggest fan, he's a decent presenter. Get rid of that patronising hypercritical twonk Shearer though. Very good player in his time absolutely, but criticises players for practically the same mistakes he made. Terrible pundit!

When will this new channel launch?

Wow, fair play to BT.

Is this on freesat too?

Nice one... Cheers

Wondering if the extra 5 a month would incur a new 12m contract?

Rarely watch bt sport as it is, think the CL thing isn't going to suddenly make them a big deal. BT vision is awful, BT Internet and their service has been awful, in my experience, over the last year or two. Can't wait till I move next month and can jump on virgin fibre optic. The whole BT sport thing reeks of a failed project like Setanta.

BT Sport/Broadband customers should have expected to be hit with the additional charge to watch football - European or otherwise.
BT aren't giving away anything for 'free'. All the PL games that BT have rights to were subsidised by all other BT Broadband customers (including those who have no interest in sports) as well as from whatever OpenReach takes from allowing other ISPs to use their telecommunications infrustructure.

I didn't even know BT did a TV service.

Went to cancel it today as the email your 12 months free sport is ending landed in the inbox the other day.First tried to offer me another "free year" for signing up for 12 month broadband again then when I said no they offered the "free lite version" which has some of the matches but not all.

So I can watch these certain few games for free on my freesat tele, without owning anything BT? Or do I have to pay £5 a month to watch this channel?

Yeah and I agree with the comment about it stinking of setanta sports. I don't think Bt sport will be able to takeover from sky sports.

Errr...Except when they did during the 2013-14 season:

This is great news, only downside is team includes slippy Gerrard.

BT do a good job of the Scottish league which no doubt will spark a wee debate here when i say there are some good games in there...

Sounds good, thanks OP.

Anyone know the channel numbers yet on digital TV or know when we'll be told them, particularly on Virgin Media?

Errr...Except that was just over 1 day and was premier league, not European. BT will be showing at least 26 Champions League & Europa League games completely free over the course of next season, Sky have never done that.

Why would Sky do it?

BT are simply showing the matches that would've been on ITV anyway.

whilst I'm not saying this isn't good, isn't it just things that used to be free are just free somewhere else now?

12 UEFA Champions League matches and 14 UEFA Europa League matches... that's a lot less than ITV used to show plus one each of those will be the final. So thanks BT for the Free offering but it's still less than us poor folk used to have

Yeah, it's a shame that this has gone over to pay TV. It was pretty much the last of the decent free football we had left. All we have now is the FA Cup and even half of that is on BT Sport. The cheaper packages are only available to those who have BT Infinity, if you use anyone else for broadband then you won't get anything for cheap as you'd have to subscribe to a Sky or Virgin Media TV package with sport which isn't cheap at all!

These 26 matches will be free to air, no need to be a BT customer.

Heat from me thanks so much

What constitutes "hot"? If charging more than most other providers, buying the rights to show football and then giving some away free to non-customers is hot then yeah.

Wouldn't touch another BT product if you paid me.

I've seen lots of people moaning about the price BT will be charging for the channel showing the European games but I've not seen any people moaning about Sky not lowering their prices despite them losing the European games.

With regard to Sky freebies, they sometimes show F1 shows (mostly the early morning qualifying) on Sky One.

its similar games itv been showing for years just not free in HD i doubt

The word on the street is BT have signed Jeremy Clarkson as a pundit. Should be rather entertaining

Existing BT Broadband customers (in contract) will still get BT Sport 1 free (includes the live Barclays Premier League football, Scottish Professional Football League and Aviva Premiership rugby union).

They are charging for the new euro channel, £5 per month to existing broadband customers, or free if you have BTTV. Don't forget that includes ALL 351 Champions League & Europa League matches.
