A pretty good price for a decent NAS drive. I have one connected to my BT homehub which is accessed by my philips wireless music players and my Sony bravia TV (via a wireless access point) as well as my PC and laptop.

Only downside is it has an Auto sleep mode which is great but if you are using it as a media server (which I am) you cannot use this mode and the drive is always spinning. You can set it to go to sleep for fixed periods (i.e. overnight) but the constant humming during the day can be a little annoying (and probably also power consuming)

oh, and the sweet thing about the linkstation is it can run squeezeserver....

tempted but it doesn't mention windows 7 support and I'm worried about fan noise as it's going to be in a bedroom

The fan may be a bit loud to sleep near, as its quite noticeable when on full speed in a warm room (though still quieter than a PC). You can set the Linkstation to turn off automatically overnight and power itself up again in the morning though (and also have different on/off times at the weekend to weekdays). Should work ok with Windows 7 (at least according to Buffalo, I've not tried myself yet).

I've used one with Windows 7 and with a Mac and not had a problem

Not to disuade anyone from this but mine crapped out and died on me. The only way to sort it would've been to crack it open and stick the HD in a PC / external dock. Entirely possible but meant the warranty is void.

I'm not going to say avoid it because this can happen to any manufacturer but nevertheless...

Awesome price. I have a NAS drive - it's a Western Digital MyBook World 1tb, which I paid around £100 for about 18 months ago. Not only is having a NAS drive incredibly useful when you've got multiple computers needing access to the same files, it's also handy for backing stuff up, accessing your files from anywhere else in the world, and I find mine indispensible as a media server.
The advantage of this one is the amount of software it comes with - mine basically came with the online access software and that was it. The media server software I had to buy a license for separately and installing it involving a fair amount of hacking (good job there's a great MyBook community out there with simple step-by-step tutorials for people ignorant of Linux like me!). I also added a print server but it doesn't support bi-directional printing (required for my main printer) and there is no Linux driver available for my older printer. So basically this Buffalo drive looks awesome because of that huge list of software that's already on the drive! If I had some spare cash I'd upgrade.

Don't worry, it's a NAS drive. It connects to your router with an ethernet cable, then you access it over your network. If you map a network drive in My Computer it will show up alongside your local hard drive and DVD drive. It's OS independent because it doesn't require drivers.. Every single device I own can access my NAS drive including my PC desktop and laptop, Mac Pro, Xbox 360, PS3, mobile phone and even my Nintendo DS. So it will definitely support Windows 7! As for fan noise, I'm not sure how Buffalo build them but my WD one is near-silent, never hear anything more from it than the sound of the drive spinning up when it hasn't been accessed in a while.

Check out the reviews and performance charts on here...

I bought myself a Synology DS210j recently, great bit of kit. I wanted a 2 drive raid 1 setup for better peace of mind.

Is the BT client any good on this NAS. Can it be updated? as older clients regularly get banned by certain sites. Is this likely to be a problem?

Surely if it's still under warranty there is another option to sort it out?

Yeah mine is on its way out now, I LOVED this but it slows down a lot and now the media server won't work properly
