Great find thanks for posting.
ordered! thanks op
Hot baby, hot !!!!!
Wowza, was trying to get a good deal on two 4TB disks for my current NAS (to replace full 2x2TB drives running RAID 0.)
This deal is cheaper.........................with a free NAS unit thrown in to boot.
No brainer - ordered.
Maybe now I run RAID 0 and RAID 1 - yay.

Hot.
dont buy from the seller kikatek - they are kack

my order for a hard drive went missing and they wanted me to wait a month before claiming for lost parcel.

word company to deal with and had to get amazon involved form them to send a replacment
Going to sleep on it, but this seems a no brainer to me if you need the storage, assuming you can buy 2x4TB hdd's for about £80-£85 each that makes this enclosure about £15-£25, is the enclosure not that good?

Also, what's the fan noise like on these, if I get one it will probably be sitting in the living room at the back of the TV, not an issue if watching an action movie, but don't want a noisy fan if watching something a little quieter.

Sleepers weepers.
Then you will lose out on this deal then mate, as i cant see Amazon leaving it at this price. In terms of the NAS itself then the specs are not fantastic, slow processor, low memory, and hackability is not straightforward by the looks of things, but even having said that you have a cheap usable basic NAS that will serve its purpose ok. The way I am looking at it, whatt you are really getting here is two 4TB disks at a great price, and the NAS is effectively free.

Yup. No big surprise
Checking the Amazon web site, although it doesn't mention the spec of the supplied drives, someone had asked Buffalo, and they state they will be either WD Greens (which I already have and they are fine) or Seagate Barracuda's.
So neither are NAS specific, but they are known quantities and currently sell for ~£110 each.
So probably these : Seagate Barracuda 4TB
or these : WD Green 4TB drive

I Think you mean the Amazon price top int this list for the 6TB unit yes?
Amazon price at the top for 170 quid
Yeah its a pretty good price. Not quite the same bang per buck as the out-of-stock 8TB deal, but still good value.
So folks, while we all sit around twiddling our thumbs waiting for these units to arrive I had a dig around to try and see what if anything can be done with these units, over and above what is supplied out-of-the-box.
So in my case I already have a (better) Zyxel NAS with 2x2TB WD drives in it running RAID1/mirrored. I wanted to swap out the two 4TB drives we get with the Buffalo and use these in my Zyxel.
Then slot my orig 2TB drives in the Buffalo and use that as a RAID0/striped config and as a backup to the Zyxel.
I also wanted to look at rooting and setting up ssh on the Buffalo.
It seems this is less straight forward as I hoped.
There is a Buffalo NAS wiki site here Buffalo NAS wiki site, but I can't see our units listed.
In the forums there are people try to root the units and appli ssh but generally they are to other spec units. There is one for the LS210 here Applying root access to a LS210D, but I am not sure how well this applies to the LS220.
Considering how many of these have been sold, and the fact they are not latests spec, I was expecting more.
This is also a useful thread/blog Unbricking a LS220
Order update... Arriving on Monday!
Got in on this, but getting cold feet, don't like the idea of ending up with seagate drives. Would I be mad to cancel the order? (hasn't been dispatched yet)

just lost 1.5 to of data of a seagate had a microserver setup... Now selling it as I've lost most the files I wanted to host.

I've used Seagate Barracuda's for years, without issue. In fact there is one in the PC I am using now.
Having said that my Buffalo LS220 (which arrived on Sunday) had WD Greens fitted
Its a bargain. I think you will regret it if you cancel.
Don't forget this is pre-installed RAID1/mirrored, so even if you weree a) unlucky enough to get Seagates and b) one went kaput, then the other disk is a mirror copy, so you claim back on the kackered disk on warranty and refit. It will resync automatically. Mirror restored.

..........but were you setup Raid0, Raid1 or JBOD.?
You should never setup a 2 disk NAS as anything other than RAID1/mirrored unless you are prepared for the risk of losing data.
All disk manufacturers have disk failures % rates. Its not like its just Seagate.

Edited by: "meggie_dude" 21st Oct 2015
BTW, for what its worth - you should never go on subjective opinion on disk rate failures
A quick google:
Backblaze Disk Rate failures
Western Digital 4 TB (WDC WD40EFRX) 9.01%
Seagate Barracuda 4TB (ST4000DX000) 4.62%
Seagate Desktop HDD.15 (ST4000DM000) 3.06%
