You could just buy some wooden doweling of the same diameter and cut to required length(s).
I found the holes in the connectors to be tight, requiring plenty of pushing and twisting. Too much for my 8 year old's little hands.
The holes were quite tight in ours too, and one of the pictured models isn't actually feasible with the holes/angles between the rods But a good set otherwise, we joined two together with a run between and they withstood being covered with sheets

Our experience too. Brilliant idea, poorly made.
