rrp £29.99, excellent reviews on the whole, have posted a really comprehensive one below that gives an excellent overview of the product & the last one left that made me laugh (see below)
Driving these days is a pricey affair indeed. Our colleague Simon saw a car advertised for ?1500 the other day. On enquiring further he was told 'the car's only worth ?500 - but it comes with a full tank of petrol.' Sigh. So we at gadgetshop HQ have coined a solution. Forget pricey car parts - build your own. The engine you build is a greatly simplified version of a real car engine. The model is designed to be fun to put together, and to make it easier for you to understand how a full-size four-stroke car engine works. This box contains all the parts and tools you need to assemble the working model. It comes complete with its very own Haynes Manual giving you clear step-by-step instructions to guide you through the build process, all you need to provide is the time, two batteries and a little vegetable oil. The on/off controller also includes a sound chip which reproduces the noise of an engine starting, as the model begins to work. What a beauty.

5* review
Anyone who knows anything about cars has heard of Haynes and their manuals for repairing cars so we expected something of high quality and simple to understand. Overall it delivered. Inside the box was a mini Haynes manual style explanation of how a car engine works. Anyone who has ever tried to explain how a car engine works knows that this is not an easy task. The manual managed to hit just the right balance between getting all the principles across and making it too complicated. It also has a short dictionary of engine terms which was very helpful. The kit comes in sealed plastic bags with the clear instruction to only detach one part at a time when you need it. Good advice as parts are not individually numbered. We did have a problem because one of the springs was missing but a replacement was sent in the post in few days. The instructions were very easy to follow and in spite of having to insert 67 screws it was completed in two evenings and gave the Wii some time off. The only challenging bit was the fitting the camshaft and the instructions need to be a bit clearer about how to do this.

As it is a working engine the instructions spelled out very clearly "do not try to put petrol or engine oil in the model" . As if... To make sure that the pistons actually worked without destroying themselves you have to use vegetable oil. When the model is complete you can see all the moving parts and it even has lights on the spark plugs that you have to set up in the right firing sequence to get the engine to run. When you have completed the kit just connect it to the supplied electric motor, press the starter and watch the engine run. Fascinating. I've never seen anything like this kit before and would highly recommend it for any youngster interested in cars and how things work. It's not the cheapest product but I'd say it was definitely worth the money. The box says from 10 upwards and I would not recommend it for anyone under 10.

thought this would be a good replacement for my 50CC engine on my scooter but this doesnt even produce enough power for a pencil sharpner.

you can imagine how stupid i looked trying to get to the shops for some digestive biscuits (chocolate ones) and this engine didnt have enough power to get me off my drive way

£13.33 Plus you now have three of the same item.

When you only wanted one.

So have you saved £3.66 or cost yourself £23.01.

You decide.

Hot from me.

I got one of these last year. Kind of disappointed that it doesn't actually run on petrol. You just press a button and the batteries make it judder and rotate awkwardly. Also, when you press the button it plays a loud engine noise, which is quite annoying.

I could quit my job, move to China and go and work in the factory where they make these. Then I could steal one and it would be free. Cold from me.

thank you, just bought it ... did not wake up this morning thinking I would buy this!

For those that have already built this, how much construction is actually involved?

They seem to drop to around this price every year :-)

They're fun to build - but the novelty does tend to wane after the first 5 minutes, once complete.

Still, hot.

Several reviews mention 3 hours. I bought it for my dad knowing full well that he won't build it and I will end up doing it on Christmas day. I think it is supposed to be the other way round in most families. I am looking forward to it.

I ha this as a child, it was very educational.

Had one last christmas, was good fun to build but probably only took at few hours. Never touched it again since though, but then again I am 23!

Or to put it another way, you now have a 12-cylinder engine!

Not that it's relevant but £24 on the web site now

Watch out on the Argos 3 for 2 though - despite their website saying ALL toys, it only applies to in store purchases so anything which is home delivery only (a fair bit of their range) doesn't count.

Still £16.99.

Note to WIHAD, please, please, please, do not attempt to build one yourself.

But have some heat, looks quite fun.
