The Coen Brothers re-team with George Clooney for this blackly comic film set in the world of a former spy. John Malkovich, Frances McDormand, Brad Pitt, and Tilda Swinton are along for the sure-to-be wild ride filled with the Coens' trademark humour. With their overtly comedic follow-up BURN AFTER READING, the Coen Brothers return from the dark, dank recesses of the human psyche they traversed in their Oscar-winning NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN. For those unfamiliar with the landscape of modern movie psychoanalysis, this puts the fraternal filmmakers square in the cruel, misanthropic, and farcical realm of their 1990s-era body of work, somewhere between the tragicomic crime thriller of FARGO and the disconnected noir-homage anti-storytelling of THE BIG LEBOWSKI, with 2007's NO COUNTRY retroactively adding new nihilism-tinged dimensions of smart scepticism to the proceedings. In a more linear trajectory, BURN AFTER READING also stands as the third entry, after BLOOD SIMPLE and FARGO, in what could be an unofficial Tragedy of Human Idiocy trilogy, wherein characters make the most outlandishly moronic moves to devastating consequences simply by adhering to true human behaviour. Indeed, Carter Burwell's emotionally weighty score, which washes over biting scenes of explosive, anesthetizing belly laughs, is very reminiscent of his FARGO work. BURN AFTER READING is ostensibly structured and propelled by a spy-thriller plotline involving a classified CD lost by a disgraced CIA spook and found by two simple gym employees. The CIA superior who learns of the film's events (always second-hand and sometimes along with the viewer) doesn't know what to make of it, and why would he? This is the first Coen film in almost 20 years not shot by cinematographer Roger Deakins, yet the 'new' guy, Emmanuel Lubezki (CHILDREN OF MEN), has created as visceral and emotionally fraught a high-definition cartoon as any since BARTON FINK.

i love this film, don't know why people are voting cold,,, is it cheaper elsewhere?
Voted Hot

Good movie but I expect hot deals for movies to be £2.99, not £4.99.

However, I'm certainly not voting a movie as good as this cold. Abstain.

It may be £4.99 but its the cheapest price out there

I on the other hand thought this film was awful.. abysmal "plot", and not at all funny unless you enjoy a camp Brad Pitt.

Quite frankly it makes Carry on films look sophisticated.

Terrible plot.. brilliant price. HOT for the latter

Expected more from this film considering the Directors and Cast, It's a alright price for a film thats just alright IMO, Lukewarm it's not a film that I would pay £4.99 having seen it.

Excellent film i thought, especially the scene where brad pitt hides in the cupboard

Great Price

Should be renamed "Burn before watching"

not voting either way.. good price but there must be better things to spend your money on

One of the weakest films ever

That's what I was going to post.

Complete and utter nonsense.
Thankfully we got free tickets to watch it whilst on holiday last year.

Great film, again in a coen movie Clooney shows what a brilliant comic actor he can be.

Hot

Fantastic film. I love the Coen brothers, but their humour is not to everyone's taste I suppose. Anyway great price for a fairly new film.

This film is absolute rubbish. If I wasn't such a miser the missus and I would have walked out of the cinema. Don't waste your money on it.

I like the Coens but am agreement with the majority here that this was poor although I still had a few good laughs towards the end. The bit at the end where the CIA head officer sums up the situation really cracked me up.

It is funny when you go to the cinema to see a movie like this and you see it dawn on the faces of the average " X factor" viewer, that this isnt gonna be another pretty woman or dirty dancing. Watching Syriana was hilarious it was a mass exodus about 30mins into it.

But this film is about as clever as your average cabbage. The plot is insultingly contrived. And the self conscious ending which attempts to justify it all with a knowing wink is the final straw.

Really, avoid it and buy something more intelligent, even Dirty Dancing ;o)

Think that this film is like Marmite reading the posts, u either love it or hate it

Stick me in the latter category

I can't see it cheaper elsewhere so can't vote it cold - but I think it's an absolutely appalling film so am reluctant to vote it hot!
As such, forgive me not voting. Rep added to the OP though.

I thought it was original, well written and acted and a funny comedy for adults. Suprised by the negative write ups here. Heat.

Good price for an abysmal piece of crap. Voted Hot because of the price.

Brilliantly acted but slightly sketchy plot, which can be a negative or positive point.

Me, I really liked it.

The Coen brothers are great wordsmiths, the story maybe contrived and like tarantino they borrow heavily from the classics, but there plots never take close scrutiny. Just great acting and hilarious dialogue.

i bought this on a whim as i had seen other cohen movies and liked them, especially no country, but this wasnt very good at all. i paid £9.99 from hmv for their exclusive sleeve version, but i sold it to cex for £9 a week or so later, so i only lost £1 and got to see it on release date.

i doubt id buy it again, unless it was in a movie boxset.
