Its not about the box, its about paying sky £25 for a replacement viewing card

Without the Sky card you can't even get Channel 4 or Channel 5 for starters. I gave up on Sky a year ago and bought a Humax Freesat box. No cards, nothing more to pay, BBC HD & ITV HD absolutely free, BBC iPlayer too on Humax boxes. I spend my £40 a month on other things now and love Freesat

Yes you can, I have a old sky box in my bedroom and pick them up with no card.

not everybody has to pay sky. if you bought your sky installation not more than 12 months ago, you will be entitled to a viewing card for 5 years guaranteed (freesat only, no HD). But the sky box has another disadvantage compared to a non-sky freesat box. Awful navigation and no way to delete programs you dont want/can't receive. I've got sky at the moment. When my card has run out, I will get a freesat box, possibly HD will ave come down to £20-£30.

Please note:

From Sky's website:
*You may need a viewing card to view some of these channels (this currently applies to some ITV1 regions, FIVE, FIVER, FIVE USA, Sky3, Liverpool FC TV and VIVA). These channels are not offered by Sky TV and their availability is outside of Sky's control. Sky will not be liable if they or any of their content is withdrawn or changed.

Hence buying this freesat box to receive these channels instead of paying sky £25

not true, there is no channel 5, Fiver, Five US, Sky 3 without a card (you must have a card in some slot in your receiver.

freesat is nothing to do with sky its on its own platform and offers more channels free than sky do

I get channel 4 and 5 without no card. You need no card for channel 4 and you can get channel 5 with the add channels, even the cards with a house on them still have a use as they will still put the region of that card on the box, and in some places give you channel 5.

I get channel 4 & five without a viewing card

This thread proves some people have been brainwashed by sky - I binned our subscription years ago after the mass repetition finally sank in and got a second free-to-air sat box last year when sky wanted £20 for a card and binned the sky box.
How much will sky want for cards in the future??
I have got a satellite pci card in a pc which allows recording to hdd - £17 ebay and it gets HD channels.

Nice deal, very good reviews, can this work with old sky dish?

Yes - all you have to do is connect the dish cable at the back of the box. The dish is pointing in the right direction already if it was used for Sky

The bush HD box seems to have disappeared from the Argos site You could normally pick it up for around £67 but it had been on sale for around £55-£60 a few times. Cheapest now seems to be around the £100 mark

I bought the Bush HD box when it was £67 but I soon returned it because it kept overheating and resetting by itself. So im now looking for a decent one at a good price. I think I might just get a Humax one as they seem to be the best.

Humax Direct have a " refurbished " one for £179 + £6 P&P.

John Lewis have a new one for £224.95.

To add Channel 5 to a Sky receiver without a card, do the following;

If you don’t have a viewing card you can select Channel 5 by doing the following:

1. Press SERVICES on your remote control
2. Select 4 SYSTEM SET UP
3. Select 4 ADD CHANNELS
4. Change the frequency to 10.773
5. Change the POLARISATION from V to H
6. Change the SYMBOL RATE to 22.0
7. Change the FEC to 5/6
8. then select FIND CHANNELS

When the new channels are found, highlight FIVE, press the Yellow button then press the SKY button
To watch channel 5, select SERVICES, then 6 OTHER CHANNELS then select FIVE

£30 is not bad at all if you only want standard def - heat added.

I bought a brand new Amstrad 500gb Sky HD box + white viewing card for £50 on eBay - works a treat, just shame I can't record to the HD without a £10 subscription

Rather cheap - but would be nicer if recordable, (I'd never manage to watch anything if it weren't for '+' boxes)
Still - hot if you're not bothered about recording.

how does freesat compare to regular freeview? what are the stand out channs

As already said with a Sky receiver or a Freesat box you can add extra channels that are not on the EPG all you need is to go to a website to get the frequencies.

This could be good for me - thinking of leaving Sky. Just need to find another phone / braodband privider (not cable - that hasn't reached my corner of sleepy Devon yet).

If your avatar is a photo of you Babestation and Filth should be standout channs for you. lol (_;)

I've got one of these, the interface is a bit laggy along with the remote, just not that great to use compared to the free one you get from virgin media. It does get all the channels though and works as it should. There's a guide online somewhere which shows you how to add the special channels (e.g. chinese channel phoenix) but once added it's still fiddly to get to it (something the old generation would struggle with)

no sky sports news..

and what good is chann 5

i subscribe to sky and haver a freeiew box as well

but freeview is crap

and a freesat is a waste of time..

As mentioned above you just need to program them in.

its better than nowt. so basically, the only reason you would buy the bush set is to have the advantage of deleting channels you cant view. otherwise if you have an old sky box lying about, you can just look up the frequencies and add all the channels yourself. only drawback being, you have to go into a seperate menu to view those channels? have i understood this correctly, or is there something ive missed?

about.five.tv/cus…Sky . If you look down this page there are details on how to tune in channel 5 on your sky box without needing a card . The only problem is you have to go through a few menus to watch it and the EPG only works for the program you are watching and the next show on ( so no 7 days a head) . I recieve both channel 4 and channel 5 on my SKY box without a card ( i live in the midlands ) . You used to be able to recieve 5 USA ect without paying for a card but channel 5 with drew these channels from the free service. That was channel 5's decision not SKY's !!!! . they where under pressure from the makes of the shows to do this to stop our Euro neighbours from watching the broadcasts on those channels before they were broadcast in their own countries, damaging viewing figures and the price they could sell the shows for .

My two pence worth:

PhilMitchell is right - with an old sky box you do get Channel 4 and you can get Channel 5 via the 'Add Channels' route. If its not working for you I would recommend a software update and searching through the forum about adding Channel 5. Though its true that you dont get Fiver and FiveUS.

However I dont think its true that 'freesat' has more channels. There are lots of channels not on freesat as they dont want to pay for the cost of being on the 7 day epg - the main one for me was Sky News ( though maybe its there now as not looked for while). You can access these other non-freesat channels but via a round about route. That said each box handles these non-freesat channels diffferently.

My point is if you are talking about 'freesat' content then the number of channels available is a lot less than an old sky digibox.

You can pick up an old sky box on ebay from between £1 to £10. Is FiveUS and Fiver worth the extra money ? its upto you.
