They prevent knee or ankle injuries on steep descents or ascents, and also help people to judge boggy and muddy patches so they don't end up shin deep in thick mud. You sound like the type of person who only walks to the pub to get hammered and have a fist fight at the end of the night though, so would expect you to be clueless.

Clearly never walked up anywhere steep.

They are not for walking to shops with.

If you’re at an age that you need these to hike you should stay indoors, but buy these to prod the other half towards the kitchen

Something tells me you don't hike.

This group of individuals are clearly not using these poles to protect their knees on steep ascents - most aren’t even touching the ground!
This is the correct use. Note that the poles are connecting with the ground here.

Walking with poles (Nordic walking) uses 50% more calories than walking without poles according to the guardian.

An alternative way of increasing your calorie expenditure whilst walking would be to walk with a carrier bag containing a four-pack of tinnies of cider in each hand.
I'm a keen hiker. The poles are a must especially this time of year with all the mud. Mine are a little more expensive as found cheaper ones tend to flex too much but cheap is better than no poles! Heat from me!
It will help but in no way will it prevent any ankle injury.... 😔
brought. hope its not bad will take to lakeside just in case haha

Ramblers use them because they are a good tool over rough terrain. It gives you better stability and support to prevent injuries.
