Hello All

I just read this article of the BBC website. The crunch of it is if you buy a laptop or PC and don't need XP (you could install linux for free!) you can ask for a full refund for the operating system. I tried this a couple of years ago with Eversham computers looks like I didn't try hard enough as this guy got a £55.23 refund from Dell!

Cheers

you just have - lol Not gonna even ask how you found this:w00t:

I guess alot of people are wondering can the same be done for Vista?

I'd do it in a heartbeat, but I can't see it happening. This kind of thing happens once, then they find a way to avoid ever doing it again. IIRC there have been options to downgrade Dells to no OS, and the refund is something stupid like £5. At that price I'd rather keep the license and duel boot just in case there's something that running Windows virtually doesn't cover.

When we see Dells going for around the £300 figure I seriously doubt they're paying Microsoft anywhere near £50 for the license.

Yes I think you can get about £5 for xp and about £9 for vista but they make it so hard and you end up spending so much on the money on the phone call its not worth it. You also miss out on the other stuff they give you free like works and the other bits and bobs.

See the link in my blog for downgrade rights from Vista to XP, but not all flavours have the option.

couldnt they just say windows xp comes free? then you cant get a refund.

i pretty much assume that his laptop originally cost about £552.30 and dell just gave him a 10% discount like they would do any unhappy customer wanting to return their laptop.
