Do these things simply operate as remote sockets or do they detect when something goes into standby? None of the literature I've read makes this clear.

Remote control sockets. I use mine to control some of my lamps etc.

Bought a set of these for £20 last week.

They were £15 in Maplins ages ago (I bought some then as well - my whole house is remote control now!), but now they've shot up to £28 there.
