Call abroad cheap with EE - free to opt in

Found 18th Mar 2016
Text CALL ABROAD to 441 from your EE mobile and you get a free opt in to cheap call rates to 67 countries worldwide, e.g. Europe 5p/min landlines and 15p/min mobiles; India 5p and 5p. Normal rates are extortionate (around £1) so a good deal for no real effort. Was posted over a year ago but expired (I think they changed the text number).

Not saying it's the cheapest but it's a free, easy opt in so good to switch it on for the odd occasional use I'd say
Where can I get a list of countries?

Better to opt in just in case you need to use it to call abroad urgently.

Scroll down on the link and press one of the + signs to get a list. However, it looks like the site is down at the minute. You can still text to opt in though obviously.
Not for me, but it's a handy head's up. Personally I can manage just fine with Skype - I managed to get a deal on cheap credit through here a while ago and have hardly used any.

Site still down but found this PDF online - scroll to page 7 for all the countries and rates: e-gain.s3.amazonaws.com/ext…pdf
I have previously paid a huge bill because I dialled the international number directly by mistake instead of dialling the localphone number.

This add-on will at least help in keeping the bill down if that happens again.

Thanks for posting.Heat added.
Not working as says sorry we can't add call abroad and no money has been taken!

Good news, your calling abroad add-on is ready to go. (...)

Looks OK. Is it still cheaper if I call abroad using roaming (when I'm in Poland for example ) ?
Were sorry but the calling abroad Add on could not be added. No money has been taken. Please try again later.
Just use the ringo app which uses your inclusive minutes.
Worked for me, thanks. Pity they don't tell you this before you get billed :-(

If 147 is not successful, also try text CALL ABROAD to 150 ee.co.uk/hel…-go
I never understand how it's cheaper rates on payg when your on holiday abroad than when you call in the uk.
It worked for me on 441 thanks
worked for me. Thanks. checking the link they sent to confirm activation it says the cost to most of Europe is 1/2 p landline and 5p mobiles.
USA 5p/5p - pretty good

If you're on a 4G 'extra' contract then euro roaming calls and texts are free. You just need to get a data add on.
Tesco International like many other alternative is cheaper
Does this work in the US?
Thanks.
If we opt in, this will be a monthly add on, so does that mean if ee start charging for this add on in the future, would we automatically start getting charged until we cancel the add on?
I've been a victim of those horrendous EE charges, they charged me around 15 quid for a short call to Europe.
Don't know how EE can charge so much for calls to Europe, since European parlament abolished mobile phone roaming charges throughout EU countries..

Probably because calling abroad from the uk isn't roaming.

Also that law doesn't take effect for over a year.

I opted into this last year and it was great. I had to make a call to America and I was worried as I was on hold for 20 mins but I honestly didn't even notice it on my bill, must only have been a few quid
Voted cold as the better thing is to pay £1.00 extra and you get 1p international calls, which is what I have got and using it for last 10 months.
Hot, added on my EE contract for free, not planning to use it, but worth adding just in case, I came from 3 so I miss the cheaper/inclusive roaming calls. but the EE deal I got was much better than 3 offered.

What annoys me about EE is they don't publicize this and you have to ACTIVELY Opt in,
why don't they just add this to every account as default.

Because the EU regulates roaming prices but doesn't regulate international calls from your home country.

Because it's only cheap because not everyone opts in. If everyone got it automatically the rates would have to be higher. This is presumably EE's way of trying to keep hold of people who search elsewhere for an international bundle, allowing them to still charge the people who don't bother looking a high price.
