Bought this for my son last year. It was great till they suddenly required a subscription and now it’s just an expensive bookend. Truly devious company to do this. Look at the reviews which were great till they did this and now awful.

Oh! Subscription is for storage, right? Motion detection alerts and streaming are still free I suppose?
I've noticed that the white and black versions are both unavailable from Amazon at the moment (only 3rd party sellers have them). Wonder if that means a price drop may be coming. I picked mine up for £89.99 on prime day. Don't let the reviews put you off, Canary have restored most of the functionality they took away recently, and you will struggle to get another wireless camera of the same quality with a built-in siren for less. I have this integrated with smartthings via wink and it's great.

Subscription is required if you want more than 24 hour storage of recorded video, longer clips and some other premium functions. Perfectly usable without these.

I think its more of a distribution choice, maybe Canary hasn't restored their inventory with Amazon, because all other retailers in the U.K. seem to carry it.

I have one of these, and yes the subscription is for storage. The live viewing, intruder alarm, notifications etc all work free of charge. I also had an email a month or so ago saying they adding AI person recognition to the Canary and Canary Flex from early 2018 (assume this comes as an update).
Hope this helps - I find it a great piece of kit (& I don't have the subscription).

Have you checked out Arlo systems? They offer upto 7 days of free cloud storage (for now, haha).

Correct, free subscription allows excerpt of video in motion detection alerts within last 24 hours, streaming is also free but two way communication is under paid subscription.
Blink is another option. Now owned by Amazon so expect long term support too.

They do look good but probably overkill for my needs. I have a few motion and open/close sensors strategically placed around the house, so really just wanted a camera as a means of checking whats happening when one of them goes off. I also wanted a ST compatible siren in case someone was genuinely trying to rob me whilst I was out, so the canary suits me fine.

You might be right. I imagine the ton of negative reviews they had recently haven't done the Amazon sales any good.
Poor product. Notifications take an age to come through. Changed to charging for storage so you only get 30 secs so if someone has broken in you better hope they do so within 30 secs of the original motion trigger.

Have blink also. I would choose that over this terrible product
I bought it a year ago and today decided I am returning. Do not buy it, it's useless after they downgraded it for free users, not going to pay £10 a month. Amazon agreed to refund straight away, possibly that's why they don't sell it anymore.
The biggest problem is that alerts are now limited to 10sec. I bought Blink and love it.
