This is the lowest price I've seen of 550D kit so far in the UK, without having to use the likes of DigitalRev. While at the price, the camera is definitely an expensive investment, however, if you want a DSLR, you would be hard pushed to find something better overall - in addition the spec would neither disappoint, nor be outdated anytime soon.

An 'upper class entry DSLR', that contains most of the essential features, which the well received semi-pro 7D model has; condensed into a much lighter body, with nice added bonus of video crop mode, and the amazing 1,040k dots screen (even 7D lacks).

Dpreview review conclusion:
'All in all, the EOS 550D is the most compelling DSLR of its class that we've ever tested. It is hard to imagine how much more we might realistically expect from a product of this type, and although the improvements that Canon has made over the EOS 500D aren't revolutionary, the 550D is a better camera than its predecessor. In terms of both still and video capture, the 550D is currently the best camera of its type on the market.'

18 MP APS-C CMOS sensor
DIGIC 4
ISO 100-6400, H:12800
3.7fps shooting
Full HD movies
7.7cm (3.0±) 3:2 Clear View LCD with 1,040k dots
iFCL metering
Ext. Mic socket
Movie crop

The company belongs now to Comet, so should be quite reliable. Free delivery offered, also the £50 Canon cashback too, plus £19.5 quid worth of quidco potentially.

Big thanks to fat tony for finding it.

Whilst I am a Nikon man myself, this is a great price... hawt.

I ordered this myself last night, as it seems to be the best deal around ... I did post this on the Jacobs thread, but never thought about posting as a new deal .

Great camera too. The video on this unit is very impressive - you can get very creative with the 60p mode.

This was advertised on the same site at approx £602 a couple of days ago (I can't remember the exact price, but I'm pretty sure of it). I thought it was cheap and perhaps was incorrectly including the £50 cashback in the price.

If I didn't have a camcorder and 400D already, I would certainly have bought it. Even at this new price, it's a cheap deal - although I still reckon you pay a premium for Canon kit over the likes of very capable Nikons.

This is probably the best bang for buck DSLR on the market. It's using a near-identical 18mp sensor as the new 7d, it includes all of the video modes of the 7d (24p, 25p, 30p, 50p, 60p), it has a new metering mode (takes colour into account as well as tone), and so on.

The 7d includes a new sophisticated autofocus system, and a faster shooting mode but is twice the price.

This is one hot deal.

Would it be worthwhile to sell my Canon 1000d dslr and my Canon hf100 camcorder and buy this as an all-in-one alternative?

ThankYou xxx

Nice piece of kit at a nice price.

I too am a Nikon man though, and you'd have to prise my D700 out of my cold dead fingers.

£50 cheaper than when posted over a week ago. ]http//ww…-5-

That said, don't expect the video to be exceptional all the time. While on the on the one hand, 550D seems to offer very good quality output with decent lenses, ultimately it's not a video camera - it's a D-SLR first. If video is what you want, you may want to have another look.

[*]AF in video is apparently rather slow.

[*]Also the zoom will never be smooth as on a dedicated camcorder, though it would be nice to have choice of so many lenses.

[*]Using CMOS sensor, the 'jerky jello effect' would also be apparent in fast action videos.

[*]Audio would be lesser quality, unless you add use external.

Think of the amazing video as a bonus.

Have you actually seen video clips from this camera? The following was shot with 7d and 5dmkii cameras:

vimeo.com/gro…147

And as with all pro and semi-pro equipment autofocus is carried out manually.

I have seen them, all I'm saying is, that sometimes having even more consumer friendly feature would be nice - 7D is a semi-pro camera, where as proportionally more more consumers would buy this. Not everyone would like to MF all the time for e.g.

While spec wise the video is up there with the top of EOS series, but it could be always be even better - Sure the quality is awesome though when things are done right.

its gone up to £694.98...damn

... hot if you got it in time...

doubt there would be same deal any time soon.

i just called them up and said it was in my basket for £650. She wouldnt budge with quidco by me asking her to restore the price online. So i order over the phone for £650. I think you will still get it at the same price if you tell them the same.

Is this the same as the Canon Kiss X3?

Whoops...just googled it and answered my own question. No it's not. The Kiss X3 is the Canon 500D in case anyone else was wondering! My friend has the Kiss X3 and it's excellent - video mode is also excellent.

This is the big step-up from 500D. Full HD video @ 30fps, new metering system, better screen, etc.

Boo, so much for delaying, it's 694.98 at amazon too, i'd rather order from them

Yes, I understand all that, it is the term 'manual autofocus' that makes no sense. You either have manual focus or autofocus.

It means that even whilst autofocus is active, you can grab the focus ring and adjust it without damaging the lens.
