Best price I've seen today, after hours of reading reviews & checking various sites
Building upon the success of the 60D, the Canon EOS 70D Digital SLR Camera Body slots into the mid-range of digital SLRs and is aimed at keen enthusiasts looking to take their photography to the next level. The Canon EOS 70D gains a couple of improvements over the 60D, including a larger 20.2 megapixel sensor, a jump from 5.3 to 7 fps, a broader ISO range from 100-25600 (ext.), a faster and more accurate 19-point AF system (same as EOS 7D), a powerful DIGIC 5+ processor, a 3.0” vari-angle LCD with touchscreen functionality and built-in Wi-Fi for image sharing and remote camera control from a smartphone or tablet. The EOS 70D is the first camera to feature Canon’s new Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology, enabling fast and smooth AF tracking whilst shooting movies or stills in Live View mode. With this in mind and the increased burst rate of 7 fps, the 70D brings its appeal closer to the wildlife and sports enthusiasts who desire quicker and more precise focusing when capturing fast moving subjects

buying as a gift...
is a package deal with the 18-55mm plus memory card etc x
I was looking into the Sigma 18-35mm f 1.8 lense. I'm looking to make short videos but have little experience in knowing what lense's would be ideal for this. do you have any advice?
I think I'm going to go for the package. any experience of Portus anybody? Any cashback floating around?
Option 1
Option 2
Versus the Portas package...

Which did you go for? I went for the Portus bundle at £609. Too a,ny negative reviews about the others. Now thinking maybe I should've waited for Black Friday.....
You'll have to search for it as the link I've tried to provide isn't liked.
To summarise the mess above, what DSLR is a decent buy for a beginner.
The sigma is the perfect video lens, very sharp. And great as a stills as well. You won't get the best video out of this camera though.
Have you looked at mirror less (like the sony a6000?) it's cheaper and has guides in the camera to help beginners. It's also smaller and takes better video (and probably stills) than this.
I have yes, it's on my list. I'm very unlikely to be doing sports photography so a mirrorless would suit me. Thanks.
It's actually perfect for sports photography too:p it shoots faster than this and the af is blisteringly fast. I changed my canon to it and I would never go back.
Nikon D3200 is also a decent entry level DSLR and has guide modes for beginners. If you are not too bothered about grey imports, I would keep an eye on Pixelelectronics on Rakuten (as well as Portus and SLRHut already mentioned). They currently have the Nikon for £235 with £58 worth of Rakuten points. There was also a 10% off code but don't know if that is still valid.
I currently own the d3200 but hopefully upgrading to the d5300. I found the D3200 a decent camera, accessories are cheap and easily available (if you buy non-Nikon accessories) and there is even a D3200 book for dummies.
That's because they are a bunch of scammers
Assuming you are talking about the 7d mark I then I would recommend the 70d, can pretty much do anything the 7d can and it has a newer sensors as well.
As for retailers I wouldn't personally use slrhut or simply electronics
I like hdew , ship from UK
That's just my opinion
It's grey imports, warranty with Canon technically invalid, and there's no tax been paid on them getting it here, so cheaper for you

Thanks, I'm thinking of this kit >

I plan to do a lot of macro photography but will need a general use lens. So I guess I'll have to look for a decent macro lens too, I've been looking at Sigma macro lenses, but I need to research more for my needs.
Because people mentioned Nikon in the comments.
