This is a small entry level+ DSLR. Excellent reviews and superior to the 1300D and Nikon D3400 recently posted. I've just ordered after researching all competitors for a week.

See the comparison prices here.

*Launched in July 2017 at £679 RRP
*Dual pixal focus/1080p 60fps - ideal for video/vlogging
*24.2MP 5fps latest APS-C sensor
*Full articulating touch screen
*Wifi, NFC and Bluetooth
*Decent STM Kit lens
*other than a pretty basic (9pnt) autofocus, comparable with the 800D which is £700 without a kit lens
*Reviews range from medium to great

I've been watching this price drop, but this is £40 less than the next cheapest (Jessops) and is from Amazon itself (no grey import). Dropped £30 yesterday and another £10 today.

Cashback is direct from Canon, and so ought to be reliable

Been looking at this camera for a while. Was between this and the Panasonic g7. At this price it's great. kit lens has silent focusing and image stabilisation, but it's poor in low light, that was only compromise.

Yup, it's trade-offs at all points. I wanted a Canon because its cheaper to pick up decent lenses without breaking the bank. This one has everything that the D800 has - but a LOT cheaper. I considered a NIkon D5500 or Canon 750D but it is older tech and still more expensive even if you go grey import.

This is perhaps the smallest DSLR available - so good for travel. It also has bluetooth, wifi, and NFC which older versions lack.

The one cross AF point is what makes me pause (well, that and the fear black friday will make this or another canon with dual pixel a better deal). Still, very tempted, thanks. Heat

Time to recheck some reviews

Yes, I paused for a while. However, if you use central focusing (as I do) it's less of an issue (maybe more for sports). But the liveview has the latest dual pixel focusing.

I did consider waiting for Black Friday - but the next model up is still £300 more than this - and this one has fallen £50 in the last few days. Unlikely to fall more (I hope) and may well rise again. Anyways, at the moment I defy anyone to beat this. (If you do, let me know, I've still until Monday to cancel by Amazon order)

I thought I got one at a good price for £525 a couple weeks back, so I am now returning that and getting this instead. Added benefit that Amazon are doing extended returns, hence return / reorder vs price match.

I'm personally looking to sell the 18-55 in-box lens and swap out for a 18-135

I wanted a camera with articulating screen, hot shoe mount and mic input and 60fps 1080p (mainly using for video) This ticked all the boxes on the budget price range. Dual pixel auto focus is a huge bonus.

Any recommendations for places for get lenses? EBay etc or are there dedicated sites you know of for camera equipment?

I'm no sort of expert. I'm using youtube reviews, and then checking princes on ebay. If you are looking for best UK new prices this is good: camerapricebuster.co.uk/

Does this have a macro lens ?

Anyone that is looking for video I would recommend the latest deal on the Sony a6000. Much better

Maybe, but a camcorder would be cheaper if video is all you want. You don't buy a DSLR for video alone.

Really?! A camcorder with a fixed lens? An a6000 will give much better video.. and the AF for photos is better than this canon. The a6000 also takes great pictures

Vs poor battery life, no fully-articulated touch screen, no optical viewfinder, weak flash, and lenses far more limited and expensive than the established canon range.

There's arguments both ways. We tend to like what we have.

I have used both the canon and the sony. Obv for video there is no optical viewfinder so to me thats a minus point, especially since the EVF on the sony can display a lot of info. An adapter for canon lenses on a sony can be bought from about £15 and actually there are a lot cheaper lenses on the market (the small sigma ones for example)
Weak flash? Mmm.. any inbuilt flash is weak however I found the a6000 flash to be amazing.
Battery life I completely agree with although sony batteries are cheap.

I'm sure this will suit a lot of people, especially people that like fully-articulated screens, a bigger camera (I for one actually prefer that for photography) and of course the canon colour science. I was just chipping in!
I have used both for professional applications but for video I would only ever take the Sony again.

I read fairly extensively on the mirrorless vs DSLR debate before buying this. It seems to me that folk with far more knowledge than me are jumping both ways - sometimes quite strongly in one direction or the other. My thoughts were there's no "right answer", it's individual preference. This camera has the advantage of being a small DLSR with a very well equipped live-view, so it seemed to hit enough of the right points to be my compromise. (But, obviously, now I've spent my cash and invested, I'll be a fanatical DSLR fanboy )

Haha, agreed! There really isn’t a wrong choice atm.As I use both I’m not fanatical either way but canon has really been letting us video people down for a while now so I thought I would chip in! I still prefer DSLRs for purely photography and this is a great camera. I hope you enjoy it!
