Seems to be a very good price. Not really my type of item, but looking around this seems to be a lot less than most other places, even the ones selling grey imports.

Amazing deal. Molten!
good price but these lenses are useless since the nice lady at #43 installed blinds
Great lens.

Would be all over this if I didn't have the 100-400mm already (thanks to my wife for Christmas )

Astrophotographers - how would this lens compare to something like an 80ed f/6 with field flattener from the likes of orion, ascension, skywatcher etc for similar cash when paired with a 7d?

I'd go for a 16-35mm f4.

Would also like an answer to this question..

Looks nice, but fl is too short, want something in the 300mm to 650 range. I've got a cheap zoom lens for wide view, a mak for lunar and planetary, thinking of a heq5 and a small refractor for galaxy season until I saw this (quite like the 5 element Williams optic 71, but if this is 90% as good for near 50% of the price then its worth it)

That's what lady next door said too.
Great for airshows, struggling for reach with my 70-300mm.
Great price OP.
portusdigital.com/len…tml that's really cheap this is the lowest I could find it in the uk
Great lens, especially for the price! Not much in it between this and the 100-400 mkII but better than the 100-400 mkI unless you're lucky enough to have one of the golden samples.

This lens got panned by one of the major magazines when it was launched and it really harmed its reputation but every other review I've seen for it has been glowing with praise. It's likely that particular magazine tested a defective example.

That's a lot of lens for money! The only real negative is the lack of stabilization.
Sadly, deals like this will disappear if the chavs and telegraph readers vote us out of europe.

Rubbish, we could negotiate trade terms with Japan without tariffs or interference from the EU. It would more than likely be cheaper if we were out of the EU.

Negatively?

There's a series of shots here which show how the moon looks at various focal lengths. You need around 2400mm to fill the frame, so if you're wanting to capture smaller objects, you're not going to have much luck with a teeny little lens like this.

A motorised telescope the size of your car's boot is your best bet.

I wouldn't use this lens to image the moon, thats the mak's job, and on its SLT mount with a QHY camera and mosiac software it does a cracking job. A smaller FL lens like this would be suitable for nebula and clusters.

no point using a little lens like this if you have a telescope is there?

I mean, how would a small lens like this be better for comparatively tiny things like Orion, when it's barely even capable of a decent moon shot?
You often need tracking and software for deep space - but not always !
This guy does pretty good - please check this clip

Problem with this lens and others is their large size and weight - they will simply stay on the shelf at home most of the time.
No stabilization is also a fail in this age.

I tend to agree with you. It's very difficult to choose the music when you have decided not to attend the party. The idea that we will be negotiating from a position of strength when we have snubbed the entire EU, and all countries in it, is frankly nonsense.

...and the idea we're not permitted to negotiate, without prior agreement from sone unelected body, is not? Japan would happily import their quality goods to us, to say otherwise is mere fear mongering and foolish.

i assumed it was to do with focal length and maybe easier to track/stack with slr? dunno
orion isn't just the little collection of stars theres lots around it similar to milky way which you'd use a wide angle for
400mm may even be too long for some?

Can you remind me when was the last time we negotiate(I don't even ask successfully) within EU??
I don't think Switzerland and Norway are weak, negotiating with EU, the opposite...
More likely pound will become stronger outside EU so potentially a lot more deals like this will be available...

North sea and the City still got a reputation... or you can choose the path other big European countries follow, such as France and Italy, which within EU, become nonexistent...
