hmm a temptation I don't need. what's it like on a crop body like a 70d?
Equiv to 136mm or 2.7 times. Wide aperture should make it useful in a range of uses.
£236 cheapest per camerapricebuster.
Fantastic portrait lens. Been seriously considering getting this in the last day or so.

I will give in at some point, it's just a matter of time!

Get the Rokinon/Samyang instead. It's 1.4 and a much much better lens than this for the same price.

No autofocus though so not suitable for everyone.
Absolutely love this lens. One of my favourites for my 7D. Very sharp and detailed. It's one of those lenses that I am drawn to images it captures compared to other lenses. Great for portraits but also as a lens for walking around with and forcing you to make interesting framing. Wide aperture is very useful for low light and background separation.

Remember that this is not an L lens - it is good, but not the best :-)

Apologies, didn't realise the search on their website is about as hopeless as the company itself. I typed in "Canon 85mm"

The 85mm L lens is a lot heavier than this one - plus it's over £1,000 more expensive. One reason this one is so well regarded is it offers great performance at a surprisingly low price point - FWIW, on a couple of photo forums, I've read quite a few comments by people who have used/owned both and it's this one that gets their vote for the greater portability and performance to price ratio.
the aperture will not change, just because it's on a crop.
Good portrait lens and for this money a good buy if it's what you're after.

Its 10% on Reserve and Collect this Easter weekend not on Pay and Collect. This item isn't stock in stores and is Pay and Collect only.

Any one can find a cheap canon 10-18mm lens?

£179 from WEX / John Lewis is the cheapest at the moment I think.

Still the best ultra wide angle at 14 mm if you learn to use the Samyang. Makes photography a whole lot more interesting.
Hmmmm. Was thinking of getting the CANON EF 50 mm f/1.4 USM for portraits at around the same price. Decisions decisions.....

the 85mm has better feedback wide open but its probably less versatile length (in general)
crop or not may make a difference too and what sort of portrait whether environmental or regular etc
Very good.

Read up...this was in response to a comment about the samyang. Or are you here to find fault with other's comments. Eh?

yeah... the samyang 85mm..........
i did not have to look for the fault it threw itself at my feet
eh? eh? say what now?
Same price at John Lewis and with the cashback so why not buy in a British-based retailer paying all the taxes than give your money to a huge corporate with a poor tax-paying record?

Indeed. :-) L lenses may be good, but they never struck me as good value. I would certainly buy this one for a full frame camera, but on my APS sensor I prefer the 50mm lens.

FFS! What a con. Ordered from Currys on the strength of this. Looking to cancel! Jeeeees. Thanks for the tip off.

[edit] are you sure about this? There's no mention of anything about a service called "Pay and collect". If there's really a distinction between the two I think it's on extremely thin ice and I'd be surprised Quidco weren't very clear about it.

Edited by: "tin" 27th Mar 2016
I've contacted Quidco for clarification. But it does say on Reserve and Collect.

Pay and Collect is just delivery to store. None if my local stores have it in stock. If yours do then you're in luck.

That's incorrect. Focal length AND aperture are X1.6 when you put on a canon aps-c.

14mm or 85mm..doesn't make difference....the topic is the manual focus of the samyang. Your turn.

erm no, the 'topic' was the 85mm/1.4 as an alternative to the canon 85mm/1.8 in the op
you made the mistake of reading 14mm rather than the 1.4 (1 point 4) aperture of the 85mm samyang lens
thread is nothing to do with wide angle in the slightest
and the focusing of a wide angle and a portrait lens manually are totally different as well adding another level of irrelevance to your comments anyway
how you can possibly argue differently i dont know but i do notice the irony in your name
