This is a great Canon Macro Lens for DSLR users, Jessops and most stores hover around £389 for the lens

Tesco are selling the lens for £389 on its own so no deal

But they also have it as part of a kit, which includes a Tripod Carry Bag and Memory card, the price for the kit is £299.83

NOTE : It says in the description Not compatible with 450D and 40D (Basically the mean the 400D and 450D and its only because they do nbot take Compact Flash memory cards! The rest of it is fine for all the Reduced Sensor size Canon range.

So if you are in the market for a decent Macro Lens this may be the deal for you.

I collected mine from my Local store this morning, the Tripod is OK maybe £20 - £25 worth, the semi hard bag is nice but not my ideal bag, and a 2GB Compact Flash Ultra.

All in all unbeatable price.

NOTE : They also do a reduced price package with the Canon 10-22mm lens and the same accesosry kit, but not such a good deal and the lens is well overpriced at Tesco, as is the same deal with the flash.

If you are going to mark it cold leave a reason?.

I don't think a cold mark just because its £300 and I dont understand it or have a have a need for it is a valid reason!. Find me a UK stockist with it in stock at this price or better and I will mark it cold myself!

Here are some Good UK Comparisons

Bristol Cameras One of the UKs Cheapest stockists £369

Microglobe £350.38

Jessops £369.99

Voted hot - good deal

There is a similar package on the EF-S 10-22mm - same bundle for £623.

Voted Hot!

This is supposed to be an amazing lens...

This would be perfect for taking portraits and macro shots....damn I wish I had £300 to spend.. :-(

Though tbh I would sell all the other stuff that comes with it :-)

Ok deal. However you can currently buy the canon EF 85mm f/1.8 lens for around £293 (Amazon, I think). It's the best lens I've ever owned and swear it's an unbranded 'L series'. Google soem reviews or look on the flickr groups.

I would go for that instead. You won't regret it!

Agree its a great lens for the price, but its not a Macro lens, the 60mm is designed for 1:1 Macro work

As this review says

Despite all the desirable features on this lens, there is one shortcoming I can do without. The minimal focus distance on this lens is 2.8 feet; providing a magnification of 1:7. This distance is a bit too far for my taste. I was hoping I could use this lens as a low-light pseudo-macro lens. Unfortunately, this deficiency shattered my hope. I will have to live with my Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX Macro lens for macro work and my Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II lens for low-light pseudo-macro lens

Hot. Especially if you need the freebies

Very good deal, im not in the market for a macro at the minute, but im still tempted, need to save up for my 50mm prime portrait lense first.

So it does, Well I am not sure what they are on about then as the EF-S range are compatible with all of Canons Reduced sensor size DSLRS

Mind you this is Tesco we are talking about they are not reknowned for their Photograhic knowledge

Basicallay the Lens will will work with all Reduced Size Sensor Canons, as for the CF Card that will depend on the body you own. Ignore what Tesco say.

Awsome lens for still macro (flowers etc) and a fantastic price.
The 85mm 1.8 is a great portrait lens but NOT for macro - the 60mm is a true 1:1 macro lens.

Yes this is a great lens by all accounts, however for me too long a focal lengh for portraits on my cropped sensor (400D).

utfrag: The 50mm primes are not sharp until you step-up to about 2.2, and the 60mm is tack sharp wide open at 2.8. imo, its just as usuable for portraits as the 50mm 1.8 & 50mm 1.4

superb deal

This is an awesome lens, i got mine for £210 a few weeks ago from a guy on AVforums who got it as part of a bundle and didn't want it.

Pricey, but most definitely worth it!!

Is this not compatible with 40D? Tesco website says it doesn't, but Canon website seems to say otherwise. Any ideas anyone?

Can anyone post some photos they have taken on one? ... I'm curious why anyone would spent that much on just a lens? (haven't voted btw ... )

imaging-resource.com/PRO…HTM

Here's a review on 40D but they used the same lens which shows it is compatible with 40D and that Tesco website is wrong.

peter> there's a sample photo taken using Canon 40D and this lens. You can see the image quality for yourself at fullsize. (the girl's potrait).

Review here. Wouldn't go near it being EF-S personally but is a good budget Macro though I would plump for the Sigma 105mm for around the same cash if not a little less if I really wanted a macro lens.

Aha - I interpret macro as in close up, close up being very close .... much I have to learn

Overrated lens IMO.

Hi username, can you please explain why it is overrated?

I am only asking because I am interested in getting a macro lens and was thinking of getting this. But I won't if it is not as good as all the reviews said it is.

Thanks.

is this acutally a camera or just a lens?

Bloody good deal! ive got this lens and its awesome! Works fine on 40d/50d 350d etc. should work with all ef-s compatable bodies out there

dude.. this is only £ 300.
Look at the price of 800mm Canon lens - £ 11K!

I've had mine for a year and its the best lens I have. Great for Macro and general photography. Very sharp and at f2.8 you can quite easily blur the background.

Having had one for a while, I was often underwhelmed given the price. It's just not a great lens compared to something like the Canon EF 100mm f2.8 Macro USM, which isn't that much more.

Just a lens.

Didn't realise Tesco do lenses. Very hot - camerapricebuster has the cheapest price on it's own as £335.

If I didn't have the 50mm Canon macro I'd get this.

I REALLY wish I knew what you were talking about..... need to get off the auto setting of my 400d to get the most from it

fantastic lens, great results using this voted one of the best macro lenses in photoplus magazine. will def fit canon 40d camera and canon 350d as these are the cameras i use.

i paid about £390 for this lens about 18 months ago and haven't looked back as far as macro photography is concerned.

Flickr group dedicated to pictures taken with it. Really shows what it can do.

If , like me, you want to steer clear of the S lenses the Canon EF 50 f2.5 macro is a razor sharp lense for around £250.
Primative auto focus but that's irrelevant with macro and works well with extension tubes.

The following is the photozone review for this lens:

The EF 50mm f/2.5 macro is a fairly unexciting lens but it offers a very high performance despite its ancient design. The quality of the construction is fairly decent though not stellar. By today's standards the micro motor as well is a little outdated. Same goes for the life-size converter which is needed to achieve a 1:1 magnification. The new EF-S 60mm f/2.8 USM macro has been improved in these respects - at higher costs and with reduced image circle.
So if you're looking for an affordable, high performance standard lens with macro capabilities the EF 50mm f/2.5 macro can still be recommended.

know how to get a subject in the photo and have the background blurred
thanks
