Canon EOS 100D 'Get Closer' package - includes 18-55mm and 75-300mm lenses £430 @ Jessops instore

Was looking for the best Canon 100D package and almost bought this exact package from Currys for £499.

The lenses aren't the best, but a good starter package.

This deal doesn't appear to be on the website and seems to be low on stock in the shops, but there was definitely 1 left in Cardiff today!

So best to phone a local store and ask them to do a stock check in the area.

If these are the non IS lenses, I wouldn't bother.

Cold. Non IS STM lenses.

Dont bother with the 75-300, you'll throw it away anyway.

I agree, they're not the best lenses, but this is £70 cheaper than the same package anywhere else.... (aside from a couple of shady online dealers).

As a starter kit I'd say you'd be hard pushed to find a better deal.

(don't forget there's an extra £30 cashback from canon on this model until the 12th or 13th of this month... I can't remember which date exactly)

a lot of hate for the telephoto lens... without spending almost as much as this package again on top, please find a better package.

This package is £30 more than the package which just includes the 18-55, so you're getting the 75-300 (albeit the most basic 75-300 available) for a bargain price.

Jessops tend to include the cashback in the headline price, then hide the full price in smaller print, so it's more likely £460 plus cashback. Pay more and get the 18-55mm is stm kit, get used to it then get the 40mm stm pancake (looks perfect for street photography on the 100d) or 55-250 IS less than £100 each on Ebay.

Much better to start with half decent lenses than junk that could make you hate SLR photography.

I hear what your saying. But I wish Canon would just stop making these lenses to trick/disappoint the unwary.

You've got quite a nice entry level DSLR, but the 18-55 is the cheap and nasty version with no IS and the autofocus will be slow if you want to use the liveview or for video. Same for the 75-300mm. The 55-250mm IS is such a nice entry level lens and can be picked up for £100 used.

Peoples experience with these two lenses might convince them that the upgrade to a DSLR wasn't worth it as they're getting disappointing results.

It is a good price though.

agree with both the last posts. could always sell these two lenses to go towards something better...

also double checked about the canon cashback and it's not included in the price stated making this £399 after cashback.

Flog the lenses. Get the new 18-55mm STM IS. This lens has come a long way and produces nice sharp images. Build has improved, quiet motor. Pay the right price and you will get great piccies and who needs L lenses.
It's a great camera.

How did you double check, it is an ad in the paper or their catalogue, as there's nothing online.

If it makes you happy trying to justify it!!
As you even pointed out in your original post... they are crap lenses!!

Eight years ago?

To all the haters of the telephoto lens I started out with that exact zoom lens, non is etc for motorsport and took some cracking panning pictures with it, if you can work a camera and set it up ok that lens will serve you well. I eventually sold it onto a mate who is still snapping away with it and producing great results.

Of course you agree with the last posts as its what you want to hear!!!

What is the point in spending £430 on this package and then 'flogging' the lenses but then running the risk of invalidating your warranty as you don't have everything that was included in the original package?

Canon are selling these all in the same box, branded as a 'Get Closer' pack.

Why not just buy the 18-55mm IS STM kit from the start? £459 on Amazon .. So £429 after cashback.

And by any chance where you restricted to a tripod whilst using your 75-300mm Non IS lens?!
Your reply covers the problem here itself.. 'if you can work a camera and set it up ok that lens will serve you well'

The 100d is an entry level camera.. Most users will be beginners.

Yep mine was about £400 8 years ago, I've since bought IS 17-85 and 70-300mm lenses, plus a 50mm. Sold the standard zoom on ebay . I don't actually think Canon make bad lenses just some are better than others but you pay through the nose for the quality ones .

Better off to have learn/practise with the constraints of a non IS lens. If someone wants to point and shoot, might as well get a bridge and put it on auto.

Cold, the price is a complete joke.

The body is good but they're hawking two old excess stock lenses.

If you are just entering DSLR territory why not go 1100D (or 650D with tilt screen) with an 18-55 IS and a 50mm. Two quality lenses on an entry body for much less money and with far better results than you would get with this bundle.

The 75-300 will be unusable without a tripod so no point in lugging it about in normal snapping mode.

Nice! Armchair critics are out again tonight, I see.
Seems a good price for a decent body and entry level lenses capable of good results.

I shot this with the kit 18-55 on a 650D body:

Awesome ^^^^^^^^^^^^

Love your gig shots btw landwomble, superb stuff.

Cheers dude. A fair number of those were shot with the kit lens. I upgraded to a 17-55 (spendy!) but the 18-55mm is in no way a bad lens, nor is the 100D a bad camera - it's the same as my 650D in a smaller body, minus the bendy rear LCD.

Superb camera. I bought the white one a couple of weeks back. Still, I'd forego the telephoto in favour of the 100D with the image stabilisation lens. It's not much more and it helps hugely with cloudy shots when you don't have a tripod handy.

Also, it looks badass in white!

You obviously haven't got a clue what you are talking about.

I'm not sure why would you want a Telephoto lens at such a long range with NO Image Stabilisation?

Anyway, listen to someone who knows what they are talking about:

aaaahhhh, 'tis a good thread this one with plenty of nutjobs poo-pooing these lenses because they're "not as good as other lenses" which cost twice as much as this whole package!

Have some heat. This is a perfect DSLR starter kit at a very good price!
