Erm...

It is £449:99 from them anyway, and according to other posters on here, Empire Direct aren't (yet) supporting the Canon cash back deal. Im currently trying to contact them to cancel my order, but they don't seem to think it actually exists.

It's irrelevant whether they support it or not - you go direct through Canon to get the cashback...
Which I'm still waiting for!!! I sent my cashback request in over a month ago for a lens and haven't heard a thing!

ok, ill spell it out then lol! - £399 with the cashback. Thats a good deal.

Cashback is valid as long as its bought from a UK dealer and thats all. As long as its an official canon dealer.

I am sorry aircanman, but your information is incorrect. The camera MUST BE SUPPLIED by Canon UK to be eligible for cashback. It is common practice with cut price dealers (Ebuyer for instance) to import cameras from the US. You should clear with Empire whether their stock was supplied by Canon UK, BEFORE YOU MAKE A PURCHASE.

Original Poster

ok, my description was wrong.

Obviously UK products. But any dealer selling a UK product is eligible for the cashback, as long as they were supplied the cam from Canon uk.

this isnt a hot deal then?

Hm, that makes me wonder if the Empire gear is maybe sourced outside the UK then

Still, I will probably see when/if it arrives.

With the question over Empire Direct and cashback, i'd probably try and get Dixons.co.uk to pricematch this instead (because they ONLY ship UK goods, so no question on cashback). If not, their price of £478 + 3%quidco (saves £14ish) = £464 is probably as good as you'll get at the mo.

I;ve voted warm.

I have purchased one of these and I will not be happy at all if I don't get the canon cashback.

Empire Direct do list cashback information for other canon cameras on their site - so I think it should be ok

thanks for the info. please update the thread here if the dixon agrees to pricematch you. i might then follow a similar route. repped you brotha.

I bought a 350D from Empire last year and managed the £50 rebate no problem.

Just remember, the cash back is only valid between 26th June - 4th Aug 2008

Kinda gutted... I only got mine last week!!!

According to the Empire Direct website:

empiredirect.co.uk/con…spx

"Every one of our products are supplied from the Authorised UK distributor"

Anyone called Empire about this today? Wonder if they have them instore?

I have claimed Canon cashback successfully from buying a Canon 30d last year so there should be no problem.

They will only not honour cashback if the camera was imported from outside the EU.

Just a note to reassure people that it arrived at 11am today. All the documents etc are UK spec and the box was sealed, so they haven't taken out generic international stuff and put UK ones in

If, as it looks, the cashback comes through, it will have cost me £381:27 (exc delivery)

Enjoy it mate.

Looks a good price - how does it work out as £381.27
- is that with the 2.5% voucher and 3% quidco - £50 cashback?
Looks like I can get it for £425.54-£50=£375.54 through dixons tax free

I received this email from empire today:
Hi,
I can confirm this is supplied by canon and is eligible for the cashback, there will be a registration form in the package which needs to be filled out and sent directly to canon.

So all is fine with cashback.

Well, I may have my maths in the wrong order, but it goes something like this:

Canon Eos 450D 15-55 kit - £449:99
2.5% voucher = £11:25
That makes (product - discount) = £438:74 (Confirmed on my invoice)

So before VAT, that's ( £438:74/1.175) = £373.40,
Quidco at 2% of the before-vat-price = £7.46 (maybe Quidco is before the discount but I doubt it)

Product - discount - quidco = £431.28
Product - discount - quidco - cashback = £381:28
Saving = £68:71

[I opted for next day delivery which was a further £6:99]

It is a bit complicated, so I am open to corrections

To think I nearly bought one of those because I thought it was a total bargain when it dropped below the £500 mark! This camera only came out just over 2 months ago :w00t:

Bought one too, hope the CANON cashback deal will work...

Why is everyone using Quidco for Empire Direct? Topcashback are offering higher percentage, is there a reason why you are not using that?

Im not using Topcashback cos I have never heard of em to be honest. What Percentage are they giving?

Glad to hear you got it on time!
Could you do me a favour and provide me with the first 3 or 4 digits of the serial number and if you have any focus problems at 18mm f3.5?

I am trying to buy from a batch far away from 0480 and 0580 as I had focusing problems and dust/scratches under the glass of these units (maybe the quality controller working during their manufacture was sleeping :()

Oh and does anyone know what Empire Direct's returns procedure is like, any problems or delays? PC World, for example, will send DHL labels out which arive in about 3 days, you call DHL for collection next day; all in all about 4 or 5 days for collection if you don't take the item to a store. Then in 3 more days they acknowledge receipt and provide a refund or exchange and 2 days later the exchange or refund arrives.

I had no problems with PC Worlds returns/customer service but with the Canon cashback and the £50 price difference at Empire Direct, I am tempted but would like peace of mind that they don't mess customers about

They give 3% - 4% excluding VAT. I used them for the first time but transaction has not tracked yet...

Well I've taken the plunge, paid with my 0.5% cashback credit card for even more savings. Just hope they do get some stock in in 7-10days and don't cancel the order.

It's expired, ED wesbite now showing the price at £499.99

Hi guys - missed out on this!

Next best that I can find is Amazon, but with Cashback is still working out at about £430! Anyone know of any other deals out at the moment?

Check out www.camerapricebuster.com
I went for the Amazon offer in the end as I know how their returns procedure works in case I received a duff camera, been through a few 450ds with another retailer already, but got a good one now!

Can you explain a bit what you mean? Are there differences in quality between 450Ds? How can you tell?

Thanks

I am guessing the tell tale sign is when the camera stops taking pictures!!!

Some people report inferor quality lenses depending on the serial number. Or something like that...

missed out on this one too as i was hesitant as another poster on the other thread said that Empired Direct told him that they wont be participating on the Canon 450d Cashback.

might settle for the Amazon then. £431 vs £381 - £50 diff is a bit steep a bit gutted i must say.

Bump - Lightbulb, just to let you know, it is now down to £469 with Amazon (think it might of been £481 when you purchased) so worth contacting them to get the difference refunded!

Have you had delivery yet, and have you got the detail for the Cashback???

Hi there! Thanks for the heads up regarding the price, I did buy it at £481. I've got an alert set up at www.pricealerter.co.uk as well and was happy to see the price go down

Any idea if multiple refunds can be opbtained within the 30 days from Amazon, in case it drops again? I think the price drop came about to match ebuyer who have the 450d listed at £469.99 in their latest newsletter
hxxp://ebuyer.com/pro…078 (link masked just incase clicks from here cause a mysterious price rise!)

Canon Cashback info and form is here (light grey links on the right of the page):

Sorry I missed your post! I was having a focusing problem with the kit lens fully zoomed out/at wide angle and particularly noticeable at larger apertures such as f3.5 f4.0 etc. I noticed it as the pictures were appearing soft and out of focus when using auto focus, yet using the Live view feature, focusing was dead on. After reading about, I found a focus test chart which I made and tested on to be sure it wasn't user error and this confirmed the camera was focusing in front of the intended target.

If you don't notice then there probably isn't a problem

No worries, better late than never

Many thanks for your reply

LightBulb - it is 'vague' to say the least as to who actually participates in the promotion!!!!!!

Do Amazon / ED / eBuyer all count as participating outlets?

To me it seems like you wlll get cashback as long as you buy a UK spec camera (non-grey import) from a UK retailer rather than specific retailers being part of the promotion. This is how I have seen past promotions when Canon used to give away CompactFlash cards with smaller camera purchases. Hopefully there aren't any unscrupulous retailers advertising the £50 cashback promotion on their sites/in their shops if their sales aren't eligible for cashback. No doubt Amazon and eBuyer will be accepted for cashback, don't know about ED but I don't see why Canon won't pay out seeing as buyers from here have received UK spec. stock.

The terms and conditions have the final say so it's probably best to call the number below and ask for a list of partcipating retailers:

Hi! The faulty cameras were from PC World online who exchanged and refunded without problems. The good one came from Amazon

Just a tip for anyone wanting to buy this camera, and might be going on holiday soon.

Have been lurking on AV Forums, and a poster there suggested that you can pick it up from Dixons Tax Free for £425! AND you can also claim the £50 cashback, making this bad boy £375!!!!!

Fortunately, I am off to Manchester Airport tomorrow, so fingers crossed, I will let you all know how I get on!
