I really want to go for this. However, how much would a half decent bag and a fast memory card cost?

Not used Play.com before, are they in the UK and does anyone have an email address to check that these are UK Specced Canons as there are grey imports about ?

Typical, I ordered the Nikon D5000 last week. Should I switch?

Brilliant price for this. Heat added and repped!

Now I have to look for pennies at the back of the couch to buy this beast.....

play.com is 1 of the biggest sites there are milocoon, its definately UK stock, not grey imports. Bags are cheap on ebay under £12 for sure, card prices depend on how big you want them. This would be a decent 1: play.com/Ele…b=0

You can get bigger but class is the best you can get, you need class 6 or higher 1080p video recording.

I'm actually more interested in HD video side of this and the fact that unlike 500D it can do it in 25FPS with the 1920x1080 resolution. Canon 5D Mark II has actually been used a lot by amateur film makers as a cheap option of recording HD (season 6 finale of House MD is apparently shot with it) and I wonder how the HD video on this would compare. I'm probably hoping for a bit much though since the latter camera is more than twice the price of this.

just be aware play will give you no support if the camera develops a fault.

The video on this is virtually identical to that of the 5D Mark II i THINK i read. Just make sure you use a good lens. I don't think it has autofocus, you'll need to do that manually i believe. I'd like to upgrade from my 400d but £549 is still a hell of alot. Think i'll wait 9 months and hopefully it will be £450 after cashback by then.

15 quid for a fast 8 gig sdhc and 30 upwards for a half decent bag. though you could cut corners if you had to.

Anyone got a spare McDonalds £1 voucher, lol

Seems a good price, shame (even with the £1 off) I can't really afford it

good price, next chepets is £665

Why do you say that? They are legally obliged to get it repaired for you under guarantee. In my experience of problems with items from Play (inherently not-fit-for-purpose Asus Eee 900 and some headphones that didn't turn up) they have been good.

i'm no expert, but they're not part of the uk (operate from jersey) and have a 30 day return policy but thats it, as far as i'm aware.

It does look like a nice camera. dpreview says it's slightly let down by the lens but that's due to the excessive number of pixels. If it had a few less it would be even better in low lighting conditions, presumably.

Yes, I'm a little bit concerned about that too, but in the case of the Eee once I'd sent it back to Asus twice for them to fail to fix the design fault (battery discharging even when switched off) it must have been a couple of months old but when I rang Play to tell them it was not fit for purpose, they gave me a full refund. Sample of 1, I know...

Found a good example on Vimeo, for the money the video seems extremely good. Coincidently I also need a new camera so this maybe a case of killing two birds with one stone.

As mentioned though Play are a bit of a pain in the **** region when it comes to after service once the 28 days are up although wouldn't you have to deal with Canon anyway, once that period is up? I think though I may just wait until other retailers start to price match (then again I would have to wait anyway since not going to have enough money for about a month :p)

Basic consumer law: your contract is with the retailer, not the manufacturer. Play might tell you to send it back to Canon but they need to make the arrangement (like they did with getting my Eee repaired). The 30-day return policy is presumably an extension of the 7-day cooling-off period legally provided by the Distance Selling Regulations for returning it for no other reason than you don't like it. Assuming play.com is subject to such legislation!

isnt that uk consumer law though? which play isnt a part of.

Yes it is - it all depends on whether play.com honours/is bound by it or not, as I tried to mention in my previous comments. It looks as if Jersey does have some sort of law along those lines.

Edit: the DSRs are uncertain; I'd be surprised if the law about who you have your contract with is any different in Jersey though, but then IANAL...

Thanx sandym just purchased for my sons 21st was going for the 500d at the same price so this is a very good offer for me.

Banned

what fabby price!! however i only got the 450d a few months ago and still extremely happy with that!

ps definitely dont get the 500d - reviews etc dont come out half as good as the 450d or 550d - i had a play with it and checked the photo quality etc - definitely go for 550d!!!

this is the best price for this by far

I have the camera and it cant be faulted.

I just bought myself a Nikon D90 Kit for £750 (£690 with the £60 cashback) with the 18-105 lens... Much better camera than ths canon for not a lot more money!!

PS The Canon lens you get with this camera isn't very good!

For this price the lens is almost free and hopefully quidco.

Very good deal, just ordered mine now, only recently returned the 450d to currys coz the security seal had been tampered with and that was £500. So this is a very good price.
Worryingly, the title doesn't state its the IS lens though. Even though the enlarged image shows IS lens, it might be a generic pic. Fingers crossed.
