Canon's standard kit lens gets a lot of unjustified stick, just look at this:

http://www.dxomark.com/index.php/en/Lens-with-Camera/Compare-lenses/(lens1)/158/(lens2)/160/(lens3)/161/(onglet)/0/(brand)/Canon/(brand2)/Nikkor/(brand3)/Olympus

....an independent lens assessment by a highly respected professional lab scores the Canon 18-55mm kit lens higher than either the Nikon or Olympus equivalents.

Good deal, BTW, heat added.

wont get the best out of the camera though - why limit the image quality capability of the camera with a cheap sub standard lens?

Brilliant price - glad I held off on the Currys deal and (almost, without cashback) hits the £600 mark that has been mentioned a few times on this camera. Hot.

Decisions decisions! If only canon had cashback ATM

Canon cashback would be a bonus (seems to have been between £30 to £50 previously), however, with the impending VAT rise that would cancel out some of this cashback amount if the prices remained similar. Undoubtedly it will get cheaper and has been highlighted on some threads on this camera, but generally agreed that it wont crash in price over the coming months; more like a few pounds off here or there.

from the digitalpicture.com:

"The Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens, when purchased in a kit with Canon EOS DSLR, is a good value. The incremental cost of this lens is low and the image quality is not bad. However, when compared to the better lenses such as the EF-S 15-85 and EF-S 17-55, what is lacking in image quality becomes more clear. A primary reason you bought (or are buying) a DSLR is for great image quality - I recommend buying a better lens if your budget will allow. More specifically, I recommend buying the EF-S 15-85 or the EF-S 17-55. If your budget does not allow for a better lens right now, get started with the EF-S 18-55 IS and create your upgrade plan. "

If you listen to that guys feedback, he'll end up costing you a whole lot of money. Whilst his opinion is generally quite fair and balanced, the reader of such reviews should be forewarned that the kit lens is generally suitable for most of the amateur photographer's needs.

a camera body will last 10 years approx if you are lucky (clearly depends on amount of use) but a lens should last a lot longer. Most seasoned photographers will tell you you should really spend as much on a lens as the camera to get the most out of your new camera body.

Dont see the point of buying a very high qulaity camera for £600 and putting a £60 lens on it. You will not be making the most of the cameras potential.

hot deal!!

Got mine at Amazon about 4 months after release. it's such a great camera... and surprisingly small! If you intend to use the video, buy Pinnacle Studio 14 Ultimate for non-choppy results.

just reserved one, not much stock in the north west

can anyone tell me how much better this is over the 500d, (I presume the model it replaces yes?)

Key differences:

Higher resolution 18MP CMOS with gapless micro lenses
ISO 6400 no longer in 'expanded' range (12,800 max remains the same)
Redesigned buttons and new movie/live view button
Customizable auto ISO ranges
Improved 63 zone metering (iFCL)
3:2 format screen with more pixels
Improved movie functionality
Slightly higher burst shooting rate (though buffer holds fewer shots)
HDMI control (CEC)
SDXC compatible

Take a look at this dpreview page for more between the two cameras

in Argos, the 500d is £519.99 (on offer!), so £80 less......

Do you pay in store then?

How would I get quidco if collect in store?

For example, using TopCashBack then as long as you use the 'Click and Collect' link it then takes you to Comet - then when you pick up the item you go to the desk and make sure they take the order from their reservations (usually by giving the order number or your surname) then it verifies the cashback. Used it loads of times and never had an issue with paying with Comet.

Looks like it's just the camera body and not the kit with the lens.

Maybe they changed the website recently

Not so hot

I'm confused now. The title doesn't specify that this incudes the 18-55mm lens but if you look in the prduct information under 'other features' it says '18-55mm wide-angle Canon lens included'.

Incorrect - Product information states '18-55mm wide-angle Canon lens included'.

Well the only problem I see with this camera is a standard kit lens. I went to two different shops and tried to play with canon 550d, 500d, nikon d3100, d5000, d3000, sony a450, 350 etc. From all those comeras I had the feeling that canon manual focus of kit lens was the worse (550 and 550). I don't know why but it feels like is difficult to adjust the focus - maybe it wasnt focus but the way you move the lense between 18 to 55mm - probably you know what I mean :D. Whilst nikon or sony done very well and the movement is so smooth and comfortable - canon goes much harder - not so smooth. Also the trigger in 550d and 500d is not so visiable and touchble like in nikon or sony. Have a play and see for yourself. It seems that it is hidden into the body whilist in nikon or sony is so easy to find and feel under your finger. Well I have been looking for good video DSLR for some time and I thought 550 will be the best due to features but then I have this feeling there is too much about video but not enough about ergonomy when doing photos. Well I am certainly not an expert but these are my feelings when playing with the body or standrad kit lens. Its just feel so much better with sony or nikon. Therefore I am still undecided. What are your thoughts guys?

I picked mine up earlier. Decided not to go down the eBay route.

I'm AMAZED at this camera. Compared to my other SLR it's miles ahead. The kit lens is more than adequate although I may go for a 15-85mm in the future. Just to clarify though, it does come with the kit lens!

Quidco's already tracked so I couldn't be happier :-)

Did a quick search and found the body only for £529 + £25pp from digitalrev.com
digitalrev.com/en/…php

Don't know anything about them but I assume they are foreign.

May be worthwile if considering a better lens other than the kit one or if you have Canon lenses already.

They import all their products so it won't be UK stock as far as I'm aware. Plus, you can always sell the kit lens for around £30 bringing the camera body price down to £550 or so equivalent.

You won't regret buying this camera. I've just been taking pictures of the fireworks outside and they're 100 times better than my other SLR and point & shoots could have managed.

My only issue is that I now have the urge to blow lots of money on extra lenses!

Oh god why did this have to happen - had my eye on one for a while now to...

Been watching these on ebay go for stupid money im not paying £500 for a second hand body only!!

What to do...what to do...

If you are serious about camera stuff then keep a watch on this site:
camerapricebuster.co.uk
Don't watch Argos! Unless of course CamerPriceBuster alerts you to do so (which will be rare)!

This is the best price right now.

just wish the lens had image stabilisation, other than it's a great deal/great camera. At least they're not supplying the EF 28-80mm.

Is this the lens that comes with it then? dpreview.com/len…16/

Looking at the comet website, I assumed it gave out the basic 18-55mm without IS. Useless turds comet are.

Anyone concerned with ordering online, damages etc? Searched for instore, and none in stock anywhere near me!
