I've been tracking the price of this camera for the best part of a year (whilst patiently waiting for the model to be replaced by the 5DmkIII)

Last week the price on Amazon was around £1700.. today it is down to an incredible £1,585.46

(Unfortunately for me I picked one up last week - at what I thought was a bargain price from Jacobs for £1649)

From reading Canon Rumours religiously for the past year, I would guestimate the 5DmkIII won't be released until July next year

This is an incredible full frame camera that shoots HD video so beautiful that it's been used by Hollywood directors and US TV networks (House, 24 etc)

That's not a massive price drop, it's only 6.7%.

They are probably just trying to price match other retailers, who have it for less.

I have never heard of HDEW cameras - have you bought from them before? I would be very wary of parting with £1559 to an internet shop with very few online reviews. Are they selling a UK model, or a grey import? (edit: doing a quick bit of Google searching suggests the 5DMKII that HDEW sell is a grey import from Japan, not a UK model).

I would prefer to shop with someone like Amazon who have great customer service and are a well known name.

Trust me this is a big move in price for Amazon... it's never been anywhere near that price before. £1669-£1706 for the past few months.

Fantastic camera.
I have a 30d and would love this camera.

Can you define massive? Seems quite the wrong word .
I'll stick with vivitar.

Fair comment!

LOL @ some of the comments on Amazon from people who use the camera in full auto mode. Why spend that much and then use it that way???

I feel guilty using my GX20 in auto mode sometimes!!!

heat added thanks for sharing

I owned this camera since last year .. bought it brand new from ebay bundle with 24-105 L f4 at price £1900. This is a very very very excellent camera!.. used it in low light condition.. even in high ISO 6400 the image is razor sharp.. ISO 50 the image is simply STUNNING! Superb camera by the way. LOVE IT!!.. The only bad things about this camera is it only burst 3.9fps.. so it is not quite good camera for fast action sports.. maybe mark 3 will improve on this. Buy this camera.. u wont regret it!

I bought the 5Dii on release and it is an amazing camera. Incredible image quality, crop ability and low light capability.

Extremely hot deal.

But remember, you need good glass to make the most of it. I recommend the 35L and 135L primes, and the 70-200L f4 IS as the cream of the lens crop.

I have not heard any positive things about this company and there are a few internet companies who are not ones you would wan to deal with. Correct me if I am wrong if anyone has had good experiences or otherwise with simplyelectronics.

I am not brave enough to buy from them. Dodgy companies always seem to undercut the competition by just enough to appear genuine and attack your custom. There are also rumours that they are Chinese/HK imports. A problem if something goes wrong.

This price drop is as massive as your IQ.

Good price on an excellent camera from a good supplier ; voted hot by me

The price drop is around 114 on Amazon. The average IQ in Britain is ~ 100. Good effort.

Not Ment to be an action camera, its a wedding and portraits body.

XXD or the 1D bodies for sports.

I do like the noise control at higher ISOs on this camera not to mention the FF-Sensor.

import. nothing wrong in that, but your guarantee is with the company as opposed to canon.
for this level of expenditure I would much rather pay £60 and get a uk guarantee

rumors are that the update to 5d is in the horizon . may be better off holding onto your cash for a bit longer, another option is the 7d which has a crop sender but reviews say it's almost as good as the 5d. if you have nikon gear then the d7000 looks awesome!!!!!.

don't open your mouth unless useful stuff comes out

Simply is based in hong kong and that is where its stock is:
SimplyElectronics Limited
1501-1508, Millennium City 5,

UK Canon guarantees only apply to cameras imported by canon UK, or Canon EU

no, wrong again, Canon cameras are made in Japan and china

and since when has where something is made got anything to do with approved guarantees and different specs for different countries !!!
Do you think the US power plug is included in the UK pack !!!

you so absolutely do not know what you are talking about its funny LOL

lastly, just to re-state so there is absolutely no nonsense propagated, Simplyelectronics is an import company and does not supply UK or EU approved models which are therefore outside Canon guarantee. It is also a foreign company and therefore impossible to enforce any protective UK sales of goods act protection.
Also good luck sending it back to get it repaired !

Wise words, you'll be kicking yourself down the line if you have any issues with the camera. The service from Canon UK is certainly worth the very small price difference, currently less than 4%.

You're also prone to being stung by HMRC, if you have to ship it to HK to have any issues rectified.

I bought my 5dmk2 from Simply Electronics last year. Cost about £2495 with the kit lens iirc. I knew it was a grey import but at the time the price difference was significant. Didn't get hit for import duty, but not sure I would chance it again, though. Ahh, the bleeding edge...

Fab Camera, btw. It is the only way to go for video, mind-blowing quality.. Current rumours are that there will be no 5d replacement until 2013. Source: canonrumours.com!

I'm predicting a 5dmkIII in July next year (2011) canonrumors

To sum up, yes it's possible to get this camera slightly cheaper if you want to take a risk with a grey import (warranty/repairs etc), but for a guaranteed UK model from an established seller then Amazon is the cheapest by a good £45 today (next best Wilkinsons £1629 - camerapricebuster)

Agreed, it's a good price. Just a word from the guru at CR as mentioned above:

I get asked a lot if people are safe to buy a 5D Mark II now. The answer is “yes”, it’s a great camera today and it’ll still be a great camera in a year.

There is not a lot of urgency for Canon & Nikon to launch new higher end cameras in the current economic climate. Things look to improve in 2011. The 5D Mark II also still sells extremely well.

Wise words indeed.

It was many years between 5D Mk1 and Mk2. There is little reason to assume a Mk3 will come out in 2011.

Secondly, as Moondogg said, the 5Dii is a great camera. IMHO it has the best image quality from all of Canon's range at present and is a bargain for such a high end sensor at the price. Highly recommended camera.

I have one, but also kept a hold of my old 40D for sports type shooting. It's a good idea to have a FF and crop sensor body in your kit if possible, as it extends the range of each of your lenses.
