Budding DSLR freaks can get the Canon EOS400D (Body Only) from Empire Direct for £418.48 with the company's 10% off voucher - see elsewhere on the forum. Take off 2% with Quidco and that'll take you down to £410.09. Canon will provide you with an additional £50 cashback on this model (that's kind of them!)...which actually brings the amount down to £360.39 - cheaper than those crummy import versions on ebay!

And dont fret just because this is a BODY ONLY model...the included lens is so-so - but Amazon are doing a great quality Canon lens for a shade under £70 that should really be four times that. It's here:

this is not as good as the other offers,
no lens?
voted cold sorry.
quidco should not be quoted in the title as lots of people do not use it.
+ £4.99 for delivery

apart from that welcome to HUKD

So taking everything into consideration, it's around £430 for the body and lens?

Which seems about the same price as a body and lens kit anyway, as far as I can remember, which is still £85 more than the Nikon D40x deal posted on here a week or so ago.

I actually owned one of these Canon's for about a fortnight, didn't really like it, prefered the 350D, don't know why, just did.

If I was going for a digital SLR would be looking hard at the Nikon right now as it's a good 8 months "newer" than this, if you see what I mean.

Apart from that, welcome and thanks for the input.

Amazon are currently doing the EOS400D at £479.79

Pixmania the same at £467

Dabs.com at £510.99

It is worth nothing too that the included lens with these three standard offers isnt as good as the one I suggest on Amazon. Also - the £50 cashback deal from Canon doesnt apply to the 'lens included' pack above - only for the bare body one.

So the Empire Direct offer is around £40 cheaper than anything else you'll get online - and you'll get a better lens as a result.

I hopem this is a bit attractive to someone out there..it certainly is to me - if I could afford it

It's a reasonable price for the 400d body only.

£20 odd cheaper here (when in stock) ]http//ww…056

I saw this site on here before. It's great for price comparisons on camera equipment:

]http//ww…uk/

The 50mm 1.8 lens is a great lens to have and is generally very cheap, I picked it up in USA for £40 equivalent. It's poor build quality thus the price, but great glass, and one stop up will provide you with great pics in low light, or for portraits.

But it's no good as an 'only lens'. It's simply not versatile enough. The 50mm is equivalent to 80mm with the digital slrs, which as a fixed length is quite restrictive. It would be great in addition to another lens. The one in the basic pack isn't great, but will be handy to have for those that aren't about to spend several hundred on an alternative. By the way, you will get the cashback if you get the basic lens pack, just the same £50 though.

Hopefully, the closer we get to the end of the cashback offer, better offers will appear on canon cameras.

Edit: It seems to be back in stock at 399 at camerworld now ]http//ww…056

Yup - my bad. What I meant to say was that the included standard lens in the more expensive packs isnt that great. Doesnt give very sharp results.

...far better to buy the BODY ONLY and then purchase the £70 lens from Amazon

It's a very good price if inc. 18-55 kit lens.

The 10% discount offer is for Empire Stores but not sure if that includes Empire Direct?

In fact I got my 30D with 18-55 from them a couple of months back for £499 less Canon rebate £65 = net £435. Unfortunately that offer has finished now as it's back to £749.99. :-(

Maybe I am misreading this, but you are saying that Canon will only give cashback if you buy just the 400D body with no kit lens? That was not the case for me. I bought the 400D with 18-55 lens, filled in the cashback form as normal and sent it all away, and a month later the money appeared in my bank account.

Canon may list on their website 'EOS 400D body - 50 quid', but just because you buy the camera with a lens, it shouldn't mean that you can't take advantage of their offer.
