The "mother" of all Canon compacts.

Strong history and reputation magnesium alloy compact range which allows full manual and now has new HS compact sensor.

Normally around £429. Still the best rated "serious" compact.

Can't really see that much point to the Canon 'G' cameras any more, TBH. A few years ago, if you wanted a robust and 'fairly' compact camera with superior image quality to a standard compact, there wasn't that much choice and a camera like this was the way to go. But with the rise of Compact System cameras like the Olympus PEN and Sony NEX (both of which can be bought for less than £380 and will give vastly better image quality, as well as a number of other advantages) I just think cameras like the G12 have had their day, except for a very few 'niche' uses.

Sorry, op.

the main issue with the "compact systems" compared to this is the price and bulk (mainly for the lens). Also this lens extends further then the standard "compact systems" lenses.

This is still much more compact and frankly at ISO 400 or below you won't notice much difference.

For DSLR users that want a more compact alternative, a compact system is sometimes not as attractive as why buy another expensive system which is not going to be as good as your DSLR ?

Ive never seen the point of these.

Either get the smaller Panasonic LX5 or get a small DLSR, like an Olympus or Pentax.

Forget the 'system cameras', the truths about them are expensive lenses and accessories and compromised controls.

I have the S95 which is basically this condensed into a more pocketable form factor - and cheaper too.
