Needed a home printer due to no longer having a fixed office based job and wanting to print on some envelopes.

The problem with cheapo lasers is the toner cost ends up costing you more in the long run. £76 for a replacement 2100 page cartridge works out at 3.6p per page at 5% coverage, which isn't all that great for a mono laser.
If you pay out more for the basic printer you can often save in the long run.

For example, a Samsung M2675FN Xpress Mono Laser Multifunction Printer will cost you £145:

but then the cartridges are only £62 - and that's for 3000 pages rather than the Canon's 2100 pages:

Assuming both printers come with about "starter" toners for about 1000 pages (which is usually the case).
If you buy the Canon with 3 refills, that will print about 7000 pages for £75 printer + 3x£77 refills = £306.
If you buy the Samsung with 2 refills, that will print about 7000 pages for £145 printer + 2x£62 refills = £269.
And after that you are quids in with the more expensive Samsung!
