Nice pocket cameras are Ixus. Ideal at this price for kids and just general use. HOT

There is no guarantee it will be the 165 (they also had a 160 in Havant) so it is always a bit of a gamble if you can't get to a store to view first, but you can get a refund of its not the 165.

Just order the 145 and they will give you the replacement model, at the same price as the 145.

The 165 was labeled with the 145 code and at checkout it comes up a warning that you will get a different model.

At both stores listed above a mate and I both got the 165 as the replacement.

Just to confirm, order the 145 using the 145 model code in the first link.

£80 in Jessops and £84 in John Lewis for the 165

Quite poor reviews for this model. V.low resolution rear screen, only 720p in video mode, plastic (rather than the usual Ixus metal), and just an 8x optical zoom (which isn't that much better than the zoom on my 1020 smartphone!).

"Times are tough in the compact camera market. Smartphones continue to offer comparable image quality with greater convenience, so if a traditional camera is going to sell, it needs to stand out from the crowd. Unfortunately there’s little to give the Canon IXUS 165 that kind of edge.

Image quality is average at best, with acceptable detail, colour and dynamic range in bright conditions, but lacklustre low light performance and noticeable noise levels at and beyond ISO400. An 8x zoom range with image stabilisation is the minimum you should expect at this price point, and to be fair to the IXUS 165, its optical performance is good.

This is also an easy camera to use, with a clear, logical menu system and well-sized buttons. It’s also nice that Canon has given the camera a few manual control options too, so you can override the automatic modes if you want to.

Trouble is, pretty much any camera at this price point is simple to use and includes similar features, plus much more besides. Shop around and you’ll find the Nikon Coolpix S5300 for similar money, yet it offers Full HD 1080p video recording compared to the Canon IXUS 165’s 720p quality, plus a higher resolution monitor and built-in Wi-Fi for image sharing and remote camera control. Then there’s the excellent Sony Cyber-shot WX220. This includes the same extra features as the Nikon, but in an even smaller package that manages to pack a 10x optical zoom lens and terrific image quality, and all for a comparable outlay.

Against rivals like these, it’s tough to make a compelling case for the Canon IXUS 165 . It’s perfectly pleasant to use and doesn’t do anything particularly badly, but that’s just not enough for it to deserve your hard-earned cash."

Nope. That's the 160 not 165.

The Lumia 1020 doesn't actually have optical zoom, it's got a fixed focal length lens like the overwhelming majority of other smartphones. Instead it uses its enormous megapixel count and a bit of software work to perform digital zooming without the usual huge loss of quality

Yep, I know all about the PureView trickery :)...and that trickery outperforms my brother's Ixus 255HS by a v.wide margin over the equivalent zoom range.

The 255HS is also a significantly better camera than this 165 - which is why I would personally just invest in a smartphone with a better camera than a half decent camera (which in all likelihood will not be with you when you want to take a photo).

I do hope Microsoft releases a 1020 successor - it really is such a superb bit of kit....but it is feeling pretty slow these days!

Heated. Thanks OP. Not quite sure why this isn't hotter but, noticed it went cold to start.

In Teesside Park store was offered the 160 - still a good deal as this retails at around £80 in Jessops and John Lewis. In Stockton On Tees store was offered the 165 which I accepted. (_;) I only tried with the silver colour so happy hunting.

Argos Telford Town Centre branch had the 160 as a replacement but Argos on the retail park had the 165.

Glad you are finding some 165 models elsewhere too.

Also if you ask to view before buying then it saves asking for a refund if they only have the 160 (which happened to me the first time I tried it!).

At the Chichester store I went to customer services and asked them to look through all the replacement models to see if anything better than a 165 was lurking about but they looked and only had the 165. Always worth asking though.

I recommend IXUS 285 HS over this one even though it's more expensive...
