What does a fax do??

The original document is scanned with a fax machine (or a telecopier), which processes the contents (text or images) as a single fixed graphic image, converting it into a bitmap, and then transmitting it through the telephone system in the form of audio-frequency tones.

in other words sends copy's of documents etc to other fax machines over the phone line

That's okay to hear the words, but what if they're written in another language, will the phone call translate them into English?

Why is this expired ?

It`s actually very useful.
If you send a fax to another fax machine (or fax application) anywhere in the world, when your machine has finished without an error message, you know that the image has actually arrived and been printed* wherever its been sent.
You can`t say that about an email. You don`t even know when or whether it will get there*
You can`t say that about a letter and it will take much longer"
"Generally speaking

I have 2 of these and have just placed an order for a 3rd. I use one at home and have 2 kids at University, hence the need for 3.
These are exceptionally cheap to run, rarely clog, have a useful sheet feeder for copying and the scanner is of good quality. Couple this to the excellent connectivity, being able to print directly from your phone, print when away from home etc. Excellent reliability and low power consumption. Can't think of anything better at this price.

Had two canons, both failed, they spend several minutes on startup and shutdown cleaning themselves even if you want to just scan, AKA wasting ink! Better go for a HP printer with an instant ink and cashback deal.
