Jessops have already managed to get the price down to £399.99 . Amazon are selling it for the RRP of £429.99 (pre-order).

This camera has only just been released so there are no decent reviews out there yet. There is a good preview video on youtube though.

I'm looking to replace my Powershot S3 with this (if the reviews are good) or a 550D DSLR.

The 35x zoom could be very interesting! It would be expensive to get this range from a DSLR.

Don't forget to buy via Quidco for 4% cashback.

True, but the image quality from the SLR would definitely be better, using lenses built for different focal length ranges, than one lens trying to cover the whole range. You'll get all kinds of distortion and quality issues at different lengths on this.

That said, if you're more of a point-and-shoot photographer, it's a cracking zoom length.

I withold judgement until it's thoroughly reviewed.

Having had a post removed in the past due to an unknown retailer I thought I'd stick to the Jessops price.

Lamdatek looks good though if they are reliable.

Why are they better than jessops, by the time delivery is added the price is the same or higher

Ok

Sx30 IS sensor size 6.16 x 4.62mm

550D sensor size 22.3x14.9mm

Incidentally the SX30 sensor is the same dimension as the previous model they've just upped the MP so probably a fair whack more noise than the 20 for not much gain, unless they've done something very clever....

Anyway as you can see by the sensor size above, look at how small the sensor is compared to the SLR (bigger=better image) so anyone thinking of going one way or the other you can see the SLR will blow the SX30 out of the water ultimately.

Good deal on the price though seems reasonable compared to elsewhere and of course bricks and mortar store to go to should you have any issues too...

If you can afford it, spend £100 more for the Canon 500D. see:

The 550 takes better pics, BUT it costs more and is not a compact

Its like comparing a Fiesta with a Mondeo

Personally I think I'd rather have the Panaxonic G1 new for £339 but this is still pretty ok

Comparing a fiesta with a mondeo is a pretty fair comparison, they'd both be in the crap category of cars...

lol, who said get a 550 over this? Sure, yes it has more MP and a bigger sensor blah blah, but what it doesn't have is a 24-840mm zoom. To get pictures as zoomned is as this camera from a 550 (without resorting to 3rd party lenses that don't really work), you would have to buy the 600mm f4L IS lens which costs £7349

If anyone could show me a 24-840mm lens that fits a 550D and costs less than this, I would buy one immediately! Actually, if someone could show me a lens for a 550D that has 840mm equivalent and a stabiliser that cost less than this camera, I'd jump at the chance!

Lamdatek - used them before without a problem

I really wouldn't blah blah the MP and sensor of a DSLR... having those factors are one of the main reasons you don't need to zoom to 840mm! Also, there's a reason a 600mm L series is so expensive, because the pictures produced are actually worth looking at! Buying this camera for its zoom capabilities is all well and good, however, you will take a serious reduction in image quality in comparison.

It looks like a great point and shoot (although quite expensive), however, it's not in the same league as a DSLR like the 550d which has CMOS and RAW capabilities.

But as most people buy a compact for holiday snaps and the like, the image quality will be fine. Agree though that this is expensive and for holiday snaps a compact for half this price is a better buy

Apparently the autumn 20 voucher is not to be used on cameras incl the Canon SX30 according to the Jessops website

Can the original poster not correct the misleading price? - as others have pointed out the code is NOT valid for this camera therefore the price is £399, not £379
