I'd agree to that. Great if you are new to the hobby and want something for an introduction. I expect it's not of much use for any serious photographers but everyone has got to start somewhere!

I also think it would be useful perhaps for family pictures and the like. Most decent compacts are potentially only a bit cheaper with neither of the freebies!

better than a compact.. in what way exactly? which compact anyway?

Can you find a compact camera with a 45x Zoom lens for 189.99? The option to configure shutter speeds, ISO ranges and a more comfortable photo grip are some advantages to name a few

yes they are a few but they are not the only criteria for choosing a camera and dont alone make it 'better'

I never once mentioned that this was better than a compact camera.

in your OP.... "something a little above a compact"
i took above to mean superior/better - obviously you meant it was in a more elevated position - my mistake

No worries - I'll take that on board and attempt to make it a little clearer! Apologies if I came across a little blunt. Been on the phone to O2 all evening as they can't seem to unlock my old phone

Goes from a useful 24mm to over 1000mm. Sample pics in photography blog look good. Even CA isn't to bad
This won't be a great camera tbh. The lenses on these low end bridge cameras are pretty rubbish.

You'd be better off buying a similarly priced point and shoot with less zoom IMO. Beginner or not.
Again! Argos keep trying to push this stuff. It's not awful but I bet most of them get left at home because they are too big to lug around and a camera which isn't with you won't take good pics! No viewfinder either - which would have helped justify its size.

Think hard before splashing your cash: I'm all for encouraging people to take photography more seriously but this really isn't the right (type of) camera for most people.

For just a little more money you can get something like a Panasonic TZ60 travel zoom which takes great pictures, has a big zoom and still fits in a pocket. Regularly drops below £200 as it's an older model.

Picked one of those up in the recent curry's misprice for £120.

Can confirm, great little camera.

You're spot on re the hassle of carrying around the bridge camera too, I bought the TZ60 as my DSLR was a pain to lug around for days out.
Heat for price, but add me to the list of commenters pointing out that rather than being the best of both worlds, this camera combines the bulk of a dslr with the image quality of a mid-range compact.

For less than this, you can pick up a second-hand Canon 100d off eBay which is smaller than most dslr cameras. You’d be missing the printer and the 45x zoom - depends on how important those things are to you. Personally I’d not miss them, but horses for courses etc
