Hi, spotted a few posts regarding "cheap" fishing gear over the last week or so, some really bad naff gear... Just came across this offer via Decathlon, The reel looks decent, the rod has undergone stringent testing too, this has a 2 Year Guarantee... at £7.99 (reduced to £7.50 now) and the purchase of some tackle you can at least go fishing and not have the rod or reel break after the first cast like some of the crud I've seen posted, so this is cheap, good quality, reliable and ordered for me.

VERSATILITY
Suitable for most freshwater fish.
CASTING WEIGHT
Casting sinkers weighing between 40g and 100g.
DURABILITY
The design of this fibreglass rod makes it really durable.
COMPACT DESIGN
You can take this 1.06m compact set wherever you go.
EASE
The telescopic rod enables you to fold the rod without taking off the line.
Guarantee : 2 Years

Direct Next Day Delivery via DHL is £4.99 - well worth checking out the other fishing gear on offer too as there's some decent bargains

It's cheap and far from naff, 2 Year Guarantee, only 1 review but it's a 5 star review.... The crud that was posted on here for £3 or £4 wouldn't last 1 cast, so this deal is miles better....

I bought a brand new sealed box Landman GAS BBQ last year for just £1. (Bargain of the year?)

Just because it's cheap doesn't automatically mean it's crap.

excellent price

If you buy rubbish that is known as rubbish, that has no guarantee then it's a waste of money, with this you are getting a decent rod and reel, 2 year guarantee and it has a 5***** review from a guy who spends a lot of money on fishing gear... Lots of people will only go fishing on odd occasions, at this price and with the quality and guarantee they will at least have peace of mind and won't be forking out ££££££ for brand names. I think this is a good deal, I'd never post anything fishing related otherwise because I know there is some real rubbish out there... This though - well, I've ordered one.

For this price it's an excellent rod for a beginner. Yes it's not going to be any good as a beach caster, which is why it's not described as one, but this looks like a really nice way to encourage a youngster to take up a hobby that doesn't involve a battery or touch screen. Heat

ive lived in london all my life and have had to leave, but now i live with a canal and a fishery at the back of the new gaff, i always see lads after hours fishing and this seems like the perfect excuse to attempt to take it up.. heat form me and can anyone point me in the beginners direction with a helpful site or forum? the vibe of those ive I can find are over competitive and not for beginners

I go fishing once a year when I am on holiday... this is PERFECT for what I would do.... Catch small fish off the pier while on holiday drinking beer...

Might not be for the Fishing Pro's or Robson Green, but ideal for anyone just starting out or fishes for a laugh like me

the guy who left the review has been fishing for 4 months. I have been fishing for over ten years lol. the only useful information this gives is casting weight. how many ballbearings does the reel have? what's the test curve of the rod, what's the capacity of the reels spool? imagine buying this rod hooking a fish of a lifetime which is then lost at the net because the reel gives up or the rod snaps! there nothing in this specification that indicates quality. for 20quid more you could get a Shakespeare telescopic rod and reel which would last for years not months like this rod.

I don't really read the forums so can't help you there but would recommend checking out the monthly magazine improve your coarse fishing.

Straight in with "20quid more" for a brand name... this is £20 less, will do the same job...

Hi, Facebook always has local groups for local fishing spots plus large groups that cover the whole of England/UK etc, well worth having a look on there

just checked amazon and you can get a telescopic Shakespeare rod + reel for a tenner. anyone with angling experience would recommend that over your suggestion......

I used to fish years ago and I am thinking about getting the stuff out the garage and taking my two kids along. This would be ideal for each of them to see if they liked it. Everybody starts somewhere.

This is a lot more portable. I keep a full kit of both coarse and sea rods (and a few poles for the kids who can put a pre made rig on - very quick setup). but the amount of gear we carry going (proper) fishing! This is very handy to keep in the boot for a quick unplanned dangle over a harbour/pier without lugging too much around shops.

Put simply, no it won't do the same job.

The rod will be fine, how many of you have genuinely had fishing rods snap on you from regular use? They're tough as nails, even the cheap ones.

If the reel lasts one summer, then for 8 quid you can't complain.

Heat.

idea for the kids and crabbing....those stupid plastic things are like nearly nearly a fiver for the ones with weights and bait bags

Heat always speaks louder than words.

Congrats on ten years, been fishing for 45 years myself, from river to beach and deep sea.

I get your point about a decent rod. This is a great beginners rod AND reel and should not be put down. Not everyone has £25 plus to blow on a beginners rod plus more for the reel to see if they or their child enjoys fishing. Let them use a sub £10 rod and reel to find out.
Others may want to take this sort of thing on holiday or even have it posted to destination to save carrying it on a flight, then just leave it behind. sub £10 is not the region that the main rod manufacturers cater for and they certainly wouldn't be comparing their rods with this.
The whole point of HUKD is to save people money. Spending more on anything they may never use more than once is not saving. These sort of posts provide valuable deals in more ways than you first realise and the op has provided a great service to many people.
This rod is clearly not for me, but I immediately saw the potential in it for people with either little money or a casual interest in fishing. I have not bought one, but I voted hot because the deal itself is hot. Did you vote cold because it just wasn't for you or because you thought it was a terrible deal ?

i would personally buy these two

fishing reel in the largest size 50rd £13

fishing rod in the 8ft or 9ft length £10 ish

That is my recommendation £23 all in for a much better outfit

- however heat for the deal above it is a good deal.

I posted that yesterday though, so award for late awards is all yours

I have thousands of pounds worth of tackle including a garbo pole Preston rods Shimano stradic reels. Etc etc etc. The cheap branded rods are still made in china anyway. And as someone else said. This is perfect for kids and camping when you need to stuff it in the roof box or trailer then have a play when you get there. This is not a match winner but still perfect for the previous reasons. Heat added op.

Shakespeare Crap

That £3 rod and reel that was posted a few weeks back - 1 x cast wonder before it breaks... Shakespeare sell the same crap but charge more based on it brand name being on the kit...
So tell me, How are Shakespeare better?

How about taking a cold drink on a hot day to some of those that are fishing, to break the ice, then introduce yourself as new to the area and would like to learn more about fishing. They'll be local so in the know, I know when I started fishing it worked for me and generally a fishermans favourite topic while fishing, is fishing. So I reckon they will be glad to help and offer advice.

You are clearly Ignorant of the Facts. You state that Shakepeare sell good quality gear when in fact they sell complete rubbish. You state that because this Brand has been in business for years that it is better because of this YET today on their own site they are selling CRAP that is made in China and is more expensive than the same identical crap because it is branded Shakespeare... More fool you.

I'm talking from experience and having owned Shakespeare gear in the past. your deal doesn't even include line that bought from a fishing shop would be roughly five quid. the shakespeare one includes it for £2.01 more than your deal. do the maths!!!

Yes, with my deal you are not paying for crap line that you would have to replace straight away... still saving money and time.

hello, could you pls. recommend a decent fishing package (rod, reel, weights, baits) for my dad. He used to fish using nets but now is old so want to sit back relax and fish at leisure?

hardly like to troll there own post are they, unlike yourself who is clearly trolling. This has gone hot for the simple reason that for less than a tenner this is a good deal for a casual beginner. I am sure in your ten years of great experience you have many a fishermans tale to tell, so why don't you put down your lexicon and go out and spin a few longer than they really were tales and leave the posting of hot deals from people like this op alone before you really make a fool of yourself

The best thing is if you want a decent package and money is not primary concern, then either go talk to a local fishing tackle shop or a local group of fishermen. Individual pieces are for the person - everyone is different, weight, balance, flex, you name it, so difficult to recommend without meeting the person. High prices do not mean quality. As has been mentioned already, certain makes are very over priced and shakespeare are not that high end. A good tackle shop will not try to just sell you the most expensive rod and reel they have, if they do, walk away and find one that asks about the person. Just their individual height makes a huge difference, as do stature and especially arm and back strength/weakness. all of which is catered for by the thousands of different rods and reels available out there. Best of all, join a local club, meet others with the same interest who can give tips on where and when to fish, baits, lures, sandwiches and coffee recommendations and where the best burger bars are located near the local fish hotspots

I'm a long time angler and have spent thousands on gear over the years. This is definitely bargain basement gear that I personally wouldn't touch and wouldn't have much faith in. But saying that, I think it's a great deal for kids to try their hand at trying to catch a few tiddlers and to get them interested. I'd also imagine it's ok for a bit of fun from a pier or jetty if you want something that will fit in your car for a holiday. Heat added for the deal although wouldn't buy myself.

the point I'm making is that for beginners the amount of fishing equipment available can be overwhelming and its easy to spend money on tacky gear which will not last a season. they should treat gear as an investment a decent rod will last many years unlike OPs suggestion. you don't have to spend more than a tenner to get a quality rod and reel from an established highly regarded brand.
