I got this for £24 3 weeks ago from ATS. All the gas leaked out within 3 days and the guy said I didn't have a leak because the machine would stop if there was.

They dont care if theres a leak. Its irresponsible really as they know that the refrigerant is harmful to the environment.

No idea if this is a good deal.... don't really care. Sweating my insides out on the train today and anything resembling air con is massive heat from me.....

It will be the same as most small local garages who offer the service who have an all in one machine, drains, measures what comes out after separating oil and gas, dries the system then holds a vacuum (or not if it's got a hole in it) before recharging according to the specs. (normally on a label under the bonnet but they have a guide)

Money will be better spent at a local independant garage, if it isn't already £30 they will probably do it for that if you explain you would rather put the money into a local business rather than national cowboys, yeah it will be a quid more but you are keeping a local company going and chance is they will be honest with you should it be faulty.

The last place I went to took £20 off me for his time as it had a bit more gas than needed as I chucked a 1l tin in the year before.

Easy money as they hook it up and leave it to do it's thing for 30 minutes.

Can you prove that? I used them last time this deal was on, got my aircon done by ATS Eastleigh in March. They said they did a nitrogen leak test and my aircon is still cold in June. If they didn't do a nitrogen leak test for you, you could argue they're not doing the service correctly. Heat from me for the price.

be warned if you have a 2014 or newer car and top up you wont be able to as ATS dont use correct connectors and gas....

I read somewhere that some newer cars need a different type of gas which was really explensive. Not sure if anyone else knows more or maybe Im imagining it!

Had mine done under this offer last year.

Local ATS claimed there was no leaks etc, yet rather suspiciously I lost all the refrigerant within a week of them topping it up.

Personally I reckon their machine blew a seal or something, bloody crooks

I don't know if it's true or not but I was if you use your air con all year round then it will last much much longer, anything upto 5 years. If it's unused it will evaporate out. Seems legit to me, I use my air con all year round anyway and I've never actually had one run out.

just wondering, whats the purpose of having antibacterial cleanser in since all they doing is draining the gas and pumping it back in, the gas doesnt get in contact with the cold air thats blown in? ... the damp smell is more to do with your cabin filter that needs changing

If the air con is still pushing out cold air, there's no need to charge it - so I would stay clear until that changes.

It depends on what alternatives you have. Where I Iive independent garages want £70. So about £30 is a no brainer.
They shouldn't damage it, they will just put the machine on and let it do it's thing. They might try and flog you tyres or say your tracking is out, but ignore their lies.

I had mine done last summer, and it's still ok. It will need done again next year I think as it's taking a good 5mins to cool air down. Compared to nearly instant cold air when it was nicely topped up.

last time this was posted i purchased and went to my local ATS garage to be told my car have different type of gas (**1234 type) which they unable to topup. so if you not sure, take your car within 14 days of purchase of deal, so if any issue you can get refund.in the end i had to go to main dealer which is quite expensive.

true. circulates oil and keeps seals coated. gas escapes through dry seals.

I've read that they're sealed units so there's no way to evaporate out? Also using it all year would be expensive as it burns through fuel
  28. bobthewibble's avatar
Had this deal last month, our local ATS was superb, very professional, unfortunately I had a pinhole leak but because they put the UV dye in I've located that, will get it fixed and have bought another of these offers to get it filled. It includes a proper nitrogen pressure test if you want it, but you might need to ask as otherwise they'll just hook it up to the machine and just run it off the less accurate vacuum test done as part of it anyway. Just to buy the refrigerant alone for our car would have been £90 so this is a bargain.

If you don't use the aircon every couple of weeks then the oil in the system doesn't circulate and some of the o-rings can get dry and so leak. So the recommendation is that you at least do that. You only need to run it for a few minutes, and in winter the best way to remember is to turn it on to defrost the windscreen. They are, in theory 'sealed units' as is any pressurised gas system but one with dozens of connections and it's thought they tend to lose about 5-10% of the gas a year. It'll keep working for years with that loss but you'll get less efficient cooling until there's just not enough pressure for the compressor to even run.

My air con as stopped working now, light comes on but I don't think the compressor comes on, it's a 10 year old Zafira , it was barely working a few weeks ago.
Will this potentially get it working again

Yes, it's one reason the compressor won't work, it will stop if the pressure is too low. If the system has slowly been getting warmer then you probably have a leak somewhere. If it's suddenly stopped then you might have a BIG leak or your compressor may have gone or some other bigger problem. You can hear the compressor start on most cars, and see the RPM dip to compensate when the AC clutch kicks in.
This is worth trying. Make sure they do the pressure test first which the terms of this offer include, and if that checks out then you probably don't have a big leak and you can see if it all starts up again once the system is back to pressure. For the price it's definitely worth a go if cool air is important to you. If it fails the pressure test then you have bigger issues, but you may be able to get the money back from Groupon as you haven't actually had the offer - you get 14 days from memory.

It's tests by pulling a vacuum, it would have done the same on any machine as they all test by draining and holding a vacuum for a predetermined amount of time, you had a dry cracked o-ring somewhere, the vacuum was the start of the end as it pulled instead of pushing so you can't really blame them, if it isn't broken and you have it checked then thats is the gamble i'm afraid, you can get a leak stop with dye or have them find the leak but the next time they pull a vacuum it may do another one.

You get to find out for £28.95, less than the minimum labour charge at most garages, it may need a recharge as it has a pressure switch to disable the system if the gas level is low or it could be more serious.

took about 45 minutes but they didn't charge because once it was recharged my air con clutch wouldn't kick in,

Wonder why they didn't plug it into the diagnostics to see what the problem was rather than letting you go for nothing!

Up to yourself pal, it's only a machine which drains the system, dries then refills the system in a nutshell. Even the Ats monkeys can't mess that up........

Each time you get it refilled there is a risk of an old seal giving up and leaking. As people say if you use your air con lots like it says in your handbook there's less risk of this happening. In fact quite a few recommend it on permantly as it's hardy any extra mpg to run it. From memory I think it's equivalent to roughly 4 miles per full tank.

For me personally Id go Ats as the garages where I live are right rip off merchants anyway.

I use my aircon every day and have for the past 8 years and it is still blowing cold air. I have never switched it off and it's been fine. I have a Renault scenic.
