High Definition Compatible Digital, or HDCD is a patented encode-decode process, now under Microsoft, that attempts to improve the audio quality of standard audio CDs, while retaining backward compatibility with existing Compact disc players.

At ~4000 titles, HDCD-encoded releases constitute a small fraction of the total CD commercial music catalogue. A small number of universal CD players include HDCD decoding, and version 9 and above of the Windows Media Player software (on personal computers with a 24-bit sound card) are capable of decoding HDCD.

An HDCD-encoded CD usually, but not always, has the HDCD logo printed on the back cover.

4gb music on 1 disc :?

Yes bitti, few reviews said it plays mp3 DVD's well.

You really get what you pay for with these, cheap components that with luck should just about last a year,i would stick with a well known brand as ive learnt my lesson buying cheap tat like this before.....never again they are cheap for a reason ... you can get a kenwood with usb at halfords for £59

Does yours play DVDs too?

If you want to play the "mine can do more than yours" try ]this one for £40 at ebuyer. SD card and USB (films, MP3s, WHY)

I've heard no complaints about reliability - mine plays fine. Plays anything you can throw at it (divx etc). The only grumble is that playlists are a bit unmanageable on DVDs.

Ooh, did I point out it plays films too?

Far better than the Kenwood that I have here at the moment which skips constantly, doesn't like CD-Rs very much and detunes itself a lot. But there again, it is 18 months old!

Kenwood used to make great japanese car stereos - they were up there with the great makes once upon a time. Unfortunately, they sold their soul to Satan (China / Malaysia) and they're now made with the same cheap parts that the Extra-Value and Stage models use.

I wish buyer would do some of those double din units that go cheap on flebay etc:

HDCD? I'm not all that up on the latest audio tech but that's a first on me! To a layman a CD is near perfect sound anyway so why try and improve it??

Could go the way of video CD me thinks!
