no this is excess insurance

You would hire car as normal with the standard insurance package, the pickup desk will then ask if you want to cover your excess, ie if you crash it, it's likely to be £1,000 excess.

This hukd £2-4 a day is to cover only this excess.. If you buy it from your rental company (hertz, budget etc) it will be upwards of £15-22 a day hence the big saving

As a new driver is this to hire the actual car for however many days you need, insurance cover etc ???

Quick follow up if it helps anyone - I also queried what precisely was covered in my excess insurance and had some misgivings about thgings such as car tyres, exhaust (!!) etc., so I rang the insurance company. They were very helpful as I went on asking precisely what was covered and didn't even show any signs of being annoyed with me! So my advice would be to check, check again and if you are not sure, call them and, preferably, get their responses in writing.

I used wordwide insure for my excess insurance as the cover seemed far more comprehensive (i.e included wheels/interior) which many didn't.

Worth a look, as recall it was similar/less money.

Here is what my policy said:SECTION 2 – EXCESS REIMBURSEMENT, KEY & B … Here is what my policy said:SECTION 2 – EXCESS REIMBURSEMENT, KEY & BAGGAGE COVERWhat is CoveredPlease note that the limits detailed under each section below are specific to that section.A. Damage and TheftWe shall reimburse you for the amount of the excess for which you are liable under the car rental agreement in respect of accidental damage (including damage to windows and tyres, the undercarriage and the roof to your rental car), fire, vandalism or theft during the period of insurance up to the amount of the policy limits below. The policy limit for Section A is £4,000 (or equivalent in local currency) for any one claim but subject to a maximum total limit of £5,000 (or equivalent in local currency) in any one period of insurance.B. Car Rental Key CoverWe shall reimburse you for costs incurred for replacing a lost or stolen rental car key and, if necessary, replacement locks and locksmith charges up to the amount of the policy limits below. The policy limit for Section B is £500 (or equivalent in local currency) for any one claim but subject to a maximum of £2,000 (or equivalent in local currency) in any one period of insurance.C. Baggage CoverWe shall reimburse each insured person against loss of or damage to baggage and/or personal effects as a result of theft or attempted theft following visible and forcible entry into the rental car, provided that such theft or attempted theft is proved and that the baggage and/or personal effects were at the time of the theft or attempted theft secured in the rental car in either a locked boot or out of sight in a glove box or luggage compartment. The policy limit for Section C is £300 in total for any one claim but subject to maximum of £150 for any single item.Does this help? I assume chips and dents would come under accidental damage. There are a long list of exclusions but its things like driving without a license, hiring longer than 62 days, business use etc.

That is what I was looking for. Thanks
