Fabulous!
It's about time they did something nice in Carlisle.

make a day off it, settle to carlisle railway from leeds return is £26.50 each
Carlisle is (in parts) a beautiful city. The castle is where they held Mary queen of Scots and changed hands many times, Rudolf Hess was also held there.
The ancient and sadly incomplete city walls and beautiful small cathedral, look up at the roof is well worth a moment. Foxes cafe near both does great milkshakes and roast their own coffee.
The city gates magnificent in local sandstone were constructed by henry VIII and now they have knocked down the council monstrosity look great next to a great railway station. Steam engine still run on the beautiful settle to Carlisle railway.
Tullie house museum exploring the roman heritage and Hadrian's wall, which runs through the city is good.
Sadly the working roman well in the city is not accessible and new discovery of roman baths part excavated has been covered back up. Apparently they are one of the best archeological finds of recent times.
Old guildhall museum where the city stocks now reside are worth a visit too.
To my shame never been the Victorian spa, with fabulous tiles and architecture means you can have a steam room in another age
Lots to discover near Carlisle too, so worth a visit.

Or use the tokens that have been in local newspapers recently to buy Northern Rail day rangers for £10 each.
Unfortunately this means going to Carlisle.
