Budget bike for the price of a supermarket BSO, what's not to like?

Sure you can get better if you spend more or buy SH but for a basic bike for a short commute, a kid or for occasional bike rides with your kids it's fine.

Have this bike for about 1.5yrs. Did about 200 miles so far mixed on roads, canal paths and trails. Gears seem to be very hard compared to a bike twice the price but for occasional cyclist like me I am happy for the price I paid. But after trying Carrera Subway I would go for Subway as it had better gears and has disc brakes.

Definitely a better bike than a supermarket BSO but for one aspect the drivetrain, I've often seen it written that 6 speed freewheels shift more reliably than 7 speed. When they moved from 5 speed to 6 speed freewheels they actually increased the width between the dropouts so the cog distance is the same but when they moved from 6 speed to 7 speed they just reduced the gap between the cogs mainly so everything else being equal 6 speed freewheels shift better than 7 speed. So low end sub £100 bikes with 6 speed freewheels can shift better than more expensive bikes with 7 speed freewheels. I'd still take the 7 speed model though as you can replace the wheel with a freehub wheel and fit a 7 speed cassette and you have massively improved shifting and strength but if you don't upgrade then shifting can be poor. Freewheels wobble so adjusting can be more critical and need to be done more frequently. For me the worst adjustment is a 3x7 freewheel based drivetrain. It's like you are always coming back to it to make another minor adjustment. Not forgetting that if you bend the rear axle slightly then freewheel wobble becomes worse and makes adjustment even harder. Also occasionally you get a hub or freewheel where the threads are worse than normal and create excessive wobble beyond normal levels, I doubt the Axle has this issue, that is normally very cheap wheels or non- Shimano freewheels. Saying that many sub £100 bikes have the same drivetrain as the Axle 3x7 but 3x6 and 1x6 is more common.

This is basically a cheapified Subway removing the high quality freehub drivetrain and disc brakes and replacing them with a basic ultra cheap freewheel drivetrain and V brakes. It's a compromised bike in my opinion to reach a price point and the Subway 1 at £240 is worth the upgrade I think.

Just referring to your help on the other thread on hybrids - how do you think this compares with the similarly priced Btwin Riverside 120 being discussed on that thread?

I'll try this! The 120 is a bit heavier, but has a freehub based 1 x drive-train, so perhaps a bit more reliable/efficient (whatever that means). Also, the tyres on the 120 are more hybrid-style (700x38c, a bit thinner). The Axle accelerates quicker with the smaller tyres but I believe once you're up to a speed, the larger tyres maintain that better?

I think, given the weight, stick with the Axle. If you are willing to spend a bit more, there is a Marin Larkspur for £180 with the British Cycling discount at Chain Reaction Cycles (and £190 without). That has a 3 x 7 freehub drive-train and fairly lightweight.

But again, if you get the British Cycling Discount, go with the Axle. At £142 it's a steal.

No, so just to clarify:

1) With Cycle 2 Work, you save money primarily because you can pay for the bike out of your pre-tax income.
2) The British Cycling discount is a 10% discount at Halfords (with various other rewards) with a British Cycling membership. The reason that it's mentioned so frequently here is because with an HSBC account, you get a free membership (or at least, you did when I registered 8 weeks or so ago, I'm not sure if that offer is still active).
