Its ok just not sure about halfords stuff always over priced imo - and their reductions seem fabricated
Agreed very fake discounts, they are fooling no one and makes me not want to shop with them
second hand ones on ebay are selling for this and more.... i had this bike till it was nicked three weeks ago . very fast light bike and good brakes. only problem was the wheels are notoriously bad ( which i didnt find out till after i purchased) .. the back wheel is so easy to bamage /buckle just from going over potholes or very small kerbs. i had it in halfords on three occasions to true it and on the fourth occasion i insisted on a new wheel which i eventually got and a free upgrade to a chris boardman wheel as apparently they cannot get of of gryphon wheels at all which seems realy odd.
definately worth this price and great for a quick healthy commute to work and you will save tons in petrol money

I've read Merida make the frames on the carrera bikes. Merida also own part of specialized too.
The sale price of these Carrera bikes seems pretty good.

As already mentioned, just ignore the discounts. For example, the original prices of the Subway 1 & 2 show they are making them up - the Subway 1 is listed as "WAS £369.99", whereas the better specced Subway 2 states "WAS £349.99".....
wouldnt expect the quality to be great

they recently had carrera fury - 2009 mtb best bike at £600 or less - down to £440 with 20% discount so there are bargains to be had . Carrera bikes genuinly fairly good i.e subway . Good price.

can this bike be used for road and off road ?

not proper off road, it has 700c road tyre, but could do tow paths at a push

its basically got a road/race frame but with flat bars
I got this bike for £239.99 about a month ago. Really like it and would recommend at this price.

I wouldnt want to go off road with it though
I bought the Carerra Kraken a couple of weeks ago at £303:99 and have been very happy with it, can't think of any thing else that could beat it for the price.
Just make sure you check any bike all over from Halfords..........

I picked up one of these for £220 from fleabay, used (but not much - was set up so badly by the shop the guy couldn't ride it!). It's a fantastic bike for commuting - not the lightest, fastest or most showy - but it does what it does really well. I can't stress enough how good this bike is for the money; don't be a bike snob - buy one.

Just make sure you give it a thorough service BEFORE you ride off.

It really is a good bike to ride, Ive owned a few (still do) and this is a pleasure to ride, makes light work of cycling to work, im fifty and its funny watching younger guys struggle with MT Bikes. As for Halfords, well I have care plans with all my bikes and its money well spent, get to know the Bike Dept Manager and you'll be fine.

jebervic -- glad I'm not the only 'oldie' I'm 48 and regularly knock out 50+ miles on my Boardman Carbon Road bike also got a Giant Bowery for hacking around town & the Kraken, love em all in different ways!!!

Sounds like you've got deeper pockets than mine, I love cycling, currently have an Iron Horse Transit (Hybrid) good all rounder, the Gryphon and yesterday I bought the Carerra TDF Ltd edition, I also have a fold up and MTB. I love cycling to and from work, luckily I have shower facilities at work!

You have great bikes and im envious!
Interested in buying this bike for work-20 inch frame so wondering large or medium(im 5 foot 8 inches.
Should read the specification-large and medium too big for me.

Don't they do an 18" thought that would be ok?
I'm 5'10" and mine's the large frame. It's fine.

Good bike though, but def not for off-road as for one the wheels aren't up to it, and I'm not sure the rest of it would cope either. It's a fast commute bike which covers the miles much more easily than an MTB. I'm only a fair weather cyclist but comfortably did 52 miles on mine the other year.

@ Mike33: medium is 20" mate.

I know cos I've got one
Always buy 20 inch frame and the medium says 21-22 frame size in the disc model and cant see one below that in the sale so maybe the cheaper v break mode, so wondering would you say types of breaks makes a big difference.
Did not see your post bigup, well this is very misleading the medium spec on this model says
■Frame Material: Aluminium
■Frame Size: 21-22
■Gears: 16-20
■Gender: Mens
■Suspension: Rigid
■Frame Size (cm): 51 - 54
■Exact Frame Size: 56cm
but you are saying this is a 20 inch frame.
Not a bad price with the attached code. But what an awful colour! Shame the tires are 700-28c too 700-23c would have been nicer imo.

Mike: yep listing is wring. There is a sticker on my bike with 20" on it under the rear red reflector. Mines defo the medium as large (on display) was too big for me when I sat on it.

Bought it on saturday from local store. Primarily to commute.

But as with any bike, best to go try it out mate. Get one reserved with code and go try it. Your not obliged to buy either.

Will do thanks bigup.

Halfords might have issues with their image and the staff who work on the bikes but if you can make sure the bike has been assembled properly, the components are usually half decent.

Did you buy one Mike?
code has changed as its June... use NUSJUN11 instead
Good enough for me! thanks

Is the NUS code for students? Do I have to show proof on collection?
both codes working just reserved a Kraken for £289 + 8% WITH QUIDCO = £265 thats £84 off
Do you get 4% for reserve and collect AND 7.8% for an in store purchase?

I think its 4% for reserve and collect. The 7.8% is in store cashback (if you register a card and wait 24 hours), in the quidco terms it excludes reserve and collect.

Burned_Alive

Do you get 4% for reserve and collect AND 7.8% for an in store purchase?

save25 doesnt work now
Neither does NUSJUN11. Deal over?
