Halfords have an up to 30% off sale on various things this weekend and this bike has caught my eye with £98 off. Looks a good spec but I’m not an expert and similar bikes in the region of £300+

Happy for any bike enthusiasts to point me in the right direction if this isn’t as good as it seems.

More about the Carrera Hellcat Men’s Mountain Bike
Lightweight frame

Ride further and for longer with a lightweight alloy frame that helps to keep the weight of the entire bike to just 15kg. The frame also features a sloping top tube and flat handlebars for a comfortable upright seating position that gives riders improved balance and more control over the front wheel.

Comfortable riding

As well as an upright seating position, the Carrera Hellcat uses Suntour XCM front suspension to soak up bumps from the rocks, tree roots and sudden changes in elevation on your ride, taking some of the impacts away from your hands and arms. 29 inch Kenda tyres make it easier to roll over obstacles too and will do a good job of absorbing rough terrain.

Looking for more mountain bike help and advice? Check out our Mountain Bike Buyer’s Guide for tips and tricks on choosing the best bike for your riding style and preferences.

Cycle faster

Enjoy silky-smooth gear changes and easier climbing with a 24 speed SRAM x4 gear set, including SRAM rear mech and SRAM 3x8 speed gear shifters for effortless changes every time. For quicker stopping, the Carrera Hellcat Men’s Bike uses powerful Tektro Novela mechanical disc brakes, which provide consistent, controlled braking on a wide range of surfaces.

Carrera Hellcat accessories

Make sure your Carrera Hellcat Mountain Bike is ready for any kind of ride. Add a Halfords Mud Guard Set to help keep some of the inevitable mud from spraying up, or make sure you’ve got plenty of water for long, hot rides with an alloy water bottle cage and bottle.

I have this bike through a work scheme. As mentioned, a nice commute bike, a bit heavy but does the job. I had to buy a padded seat for it though, me farmers didnt like the standard one.

Ideal for gentle rides down the canal and along the waterfront? That’s all I want really, or should I be looking at a hybrid? I haven’t been on a bike for a good 10 years.
Just need a helmet.
How come both colours are allowed to be posted?
The red was posted yesterday and they are same bikes

No it's not, it's a mountain bike with heavy suspension, etc. You'd be mad to use this for commuting unless you're trying to get extra fit!

A good hybrid would suit your needs far better. You do not need heavy suspension, fat tyres, etc. holding you back.

I generally don't recommend hybrids - they're the worst of both worlds. The off road performance of a road bike and the on road performance of a mountain bike.

Hybrids work well for commuting where you're mainly on road, but you want something that's happy to ride up and down kerbs.

This link explains it better:

I have both bikes for my sons.
Halfords own this shop by the way, I bought mine from halfords anyway on black Friday £325 then used love to shop vouchers at -10% discount and the Toyota card
I took a look at one of these yesterday. They come with 29er wheels, and don't look like the image above (the 16" frame I saw had a top tube that ran straight down the rear wheel hub (I'm not a bike techy)). I was told the difference between this bike and the vengeance was the wheel size (27.5 vs29), and the hellcat had sram shifters which are better than the shimano on the vengeance. No idea if that's true or not.

I want to buy a cheap bike soon, and the discounts seem good. Just not sure about which one to go for as they are similarly priced. Might go for vengeance as it'll be a touch lighter.

Any "commuter" bike in this extremely low price range will be insignificantly lighter. Commuter bikes don't have the extra wide handlebars of mountain bikes, which makes them a bit more comfortable for on road use. The commuter will have road tyres but its pretty easy to change the mountain bike to road tyres and there will be little difference. This is admittedly an extra expense but if you were commuting daily you'd probably want to change the stock tyres on any cheap bike. On rough ground/over pot holes, going up/down kerbs and full off road the mountain bike will be much better. I've cycled two 1000 mile holidays, one on a road bike and one on a mountain bike with slicks - and honestly when I was on my mountain bike I really valued the "go anywhere" nature of it when passing through cities and was hardly ever going fast enough (17mph+) to miss my road bike.

The tube difference is just the geometry used to achieve the frame size as the wheel sizes are all the same from 16 to 20 inch
Any one has any idea when Halfords might have discount on their Voodoo Marasa ?

I actually have a hybrid mountain bike and the other day i was peddling hard and fast only for someone to effortlessly glide past me . Hence, I realise the need for an efficient bike since am planning 40km ride at least 3 times a week
Amazing Deal Thanks, I’ve been wanting this bike for a long time but on the fence about the price. Now I am defiantly buying this fantastic mountain bike!

I went for a vengance for average riding on the road, path etc and it was too much work and not really suited, so i bought the kraken thinking it would be better.. it was but it was still a struggle because the tyres etc and suspension dont work in your favour on roads, i finally got a carrera gryphon and its the far best one out the lot for me, i didnt need suspension and chunky wheeel/tyre and it flys effortlessly its not the greatest on muddy cancel paths though as it has skinnyish wheels,I have been thinking about getting another bike though something like this where I can just ride anywhere everywhere, fly off curbs etc etc lol this does seem like a good price for when I feel like a change up

my flatmate's company uses charlieHR and they offer a halfords discount card with 7% discount in their pack of perks and benefits. Does anyone know how it works and if I could use together with this coupon? I'm planning to use that for a road bike but don't want to risk buying a 600 pounds discount card that cannot be used later.

This will be absolutely fine
Code seems to work on a lot of Carrera Bikes I've tried

Can't decide Between Vengeance, Hellcat, Subway 1, Crossfire 2

Not looking to do MTB (though I would if i lived near somewhere with trails)

was considering buying hellcat until i read some reviews for it. maybe voodoo bantu might be a better option than all the carerra bikes.
Bought this bike for my son for Christmas which I guess is the most expensive time to buy a bike and it cost £250, then so I'd take the £325 with a pinch of salt but £204 seems a good price.

60 out of 65 people recommend this product, 4.6 out of 5. What reviews where you looking at? Voodoo Bantu is around £150 more and has a lower rating???

I was in the same boat. The guy in my local Halfords store was fantastic and told me basically to go for the hellcat despite knowing I would have willingly spent more money. He said it was the best overall package and would likely hold some value as it was a limited edition, should I want to upgrade in a year or two. Pick it up on Thursday!
