Rough and hilly terrain is absolutely nothing to the Carrera Kraken 20" Mountain Bike. It will power itself and you along with ease thanks to its Suntour XCR-D hydraulic fork (with 120mm of travel!), Clarks SX hydraulic disc brakes and SRAM X5 27-speed gearing. Its light frame also eases your burden allowing you time to stop, smell the roses, and take in the view.

I am looking for a bike from Halfords in their end of season bike sales as I have some vouchers to contribute to purchase , missed out on the Vengeance sale recently. I went into several branches and noted the Carrera Kraken which was recommended but priced at £400. Online search this is now £350 - With a combination of vouchers(further 10% off bike price) and quidco bringing total price down to around £310) At this price would this be considered a reasonably good purchase.

Worth a read of this post if your buying a bike from Halfords

Hard to quantify the value in this, and to whether or not it's a deal. It's not like other retailers can offer the Carrera range so the only option is to vote on its value as a bike against other similar bikes.

I see this bike has featured quite a few times in the more distant past on here. It's always been well received but then it's been offered at £280-305 odd so at £350 now it doesn't feel that hot to me.

It looks a good bike no question but is it better value than anything else? I will ponder that over a google and get back to you

Do yourself a favor and avoid bikes in this price bracket with shock front forks as suntour are pants ! if you intend on doing anything like the first line of the description then send me your face in a pre paid envelope and I will happily use a cheese grater on your face and mail it back to you, as this is what will happen once these forks have broke at the crown and left you with a mouth full of dirt.
Go on youtube and type suntour shock fail see what you find. Way overpriced for what you get, clarks brakes are halfauds own crappy make. Sorry for going on but its pants, and i dont have a 2k bike mines over 20 years old lol.

That's your opinion of course. I'm sure plenty of us still have our £350-500 sun tour equipped bikes and faces in good nick!. You can hurt yourself on any bike if you take risks

Again even the decent brands are using these cheapo forks but for the price its sooo much better and the saving you could put towards a decent set of forks.

This cannondale below seems to be a good rival to the Kraken:

I'm no expert though so i could be way off. Just putting it out there.

ive had this bike for over two yrs now. it was good value at 450 when I bought it so is a good buy now. ive done some great demandong rides and this has coped as well as my friends cannondales, whytes etc. well worth it if your on a budget.

nope. This carrera is far better

C'mon guys £350 for a Carrera, cant believe this site at times.

like going to dfs and getting a tenner off a sofa.

Bought one of these in 2009 had the tektro instead of clarke brakes and similar sram kit wheels tyres lockout fork etc. For some of the less demanding mtb routes the fork does the job , hubs were crud from the start, ended up with a groove in the front leading to new bearings which didnt last long due to the hub wear, so far the bike has had the wheels swapped, new crank and BB, went to a 2 chainring setup on the front, new air fork, wider bars, superstar pedals, but hey for 350 its a great wee starter hardtail, frame geometry is bang on I'm 5ft9 riding an 18" and apart from needing wider bars it's been perfect size wise. Think I paid about 300 odd in 2009 and would say for the dough its quite good. If I was buying again in that price range I might also consider a Calibre two two from go outdoors which gets rave reviews in the mtb mags.

It will power itself and me along? So it's got a motor then?
