sounds like a good deal wonder how these compare to specialized bikes

very tempted !

I love my specialized. I'm tempted, but specialized do take some beating!

oh and it's only 20" frame so only good for tall people

Banned

I used to love my specialized as well, until I moved on to a Felt - Hell of a bike!

Just bought a Specialized Hard Rock disc and it's the mutts nuts. I always thought Carrera were a little overated...

Also available for normal height people...

Good bike for the price.

Although most MTB'ers will look down on anyone who shops at Halfords.

For the price this is a really good deal, if you're not a brand snob.

Rock Shox forks (entry level admittedly), and hydraulic disc brakes. This is an ideal first serious mountain bike.

20" frame is fairly massive though. I'm 5'11" and have a 19" frame on mine, and I probably should have got one slightly smaller.

They do an 18" version too!

Voted hot from me, not needed personally, but a very good price for anyone that wants a "decent" specced starting out hardtail.

Please note that it is not just 20" frames they stock, they also have the very popular 18" frame size as well, may be very useful info for some people, have amended the description to include this.

They do ]18" too. Edit: I see you've found it.

You'd think that with a reduction like that it would be in the "clearance bikes" section, but that would be far too logical...

Ha, posted at the same time!...will leave yourself OP to amend the title! Good deal!

A great bike for going to work or school on , hot deal!

JI always thought Carrera were a little overated...

Surely it's Halfords' own brand and hence looked down on from a great height by bike snobs everywhere?

At least they have wrestled free from the vice-like grip of Shimano (the Microsoft of the bicycle world) by using SRAM components instead.

Dont forget Quidco 6%

Seems a hot deal to me. I got a 2008 Claude Butler with slightly better specs for £350 last year as all 2009 ones were £500+ but mayve there will be some cheap 2009 ones around in the coming weeks?

i run a carrera after my beloved Marin indian fire trail got nicked :x

decent bike frame and components, its not a par on the IFT but well worth this price

It's a hot deal from me! I'm sooooo tempted (just gotta offload my dahon vitesse D5).

Is 20 inch going to be OK for me. 6ft and 32.5 inch leg?

Verry tempted....

Very good deal! I had Carrera before it was stollen. Carrera are much better brand than Halford's Appollo.

It would be great for a winter hack, reliable but heavy. Think how fast you'll be able to go when you get back on your good bike after the winter.

Ordered mine and picking it up tomorrow! Sure that is not the best bike in the world, but with disc brakes, lightish frame and a named front shock.

it is £299 now

I have an old carrera and a marin and the carrera is very good.

I think they are made by Merida in Taiwan who make bikes under their own brand name as well as make bikes for lots of other manufacturers.

pop along to halfords and jump on one to see
it really depends how you like the bike, some like a stretched out feel
some a more cramped up

Been thinking about going for the cycle to work scheme, so very tempted with this offer..

I think they are based around old Kona models. I heard they bought the old Kona jigs and manufacturing rights, quite probably by Merrida

Nice price. By all accounts the fork is a bit rubbish for proper XC, but you could replace it with a decent one and still have a bargain.

The whole bikes a bit rubbish for proper xc. The bike is great value though and ideal for the winter or going work on. It was never going to have good forks for that price. Bare in mind good forks even in a sale start at around £250. It's a very good bike for the money.

Cheers....I'm the stretched out sort. Had one a few years ago and after a while it felt cramped. Will take a look...

What's all this stuff about the fork? being rubbish....sorry I know nothing!

Also hang on why can't it go off roading (XC?) if it's a flippin mountain bike?:w00t:

It'll go off road just fine. Just don't expect too much. It won't be up to serious xc riding i.e club or race level.

Can't see myself hurting down vertical rocky slopes (I am not that brave!) just muddy country lanes.....with the odd tree root....and stuff...

I'll go have a look...cheers!
