My son has this bike. It's a great buy for the money. Had it 11 months now without any faults. I think the finish is good too.

Decent budget bike when it's on offer. Nothing special but reasonable value at this price. Just bear in mind that it's not a 'real' mountain bike and that suspension and chunky tyres are going to be more of a hindrance than a help on the road. It's got the look the kids want though!

I think most people will be better off with the Subway hybrid bike.
Suspension on this is just added weight.

Just out of interest, what kind of features would you be looking for in a 'real' mountain bike?

Mind if I ask how old your son is? Mine is 11, 145cm in height and I'm struggling to find a bike 'with gears' which he's asked for Christmas.

The 24" wheel kids bikes are too small and most of these adult bikes are too big going by the sizing guide on Halfords website.

This won't be strong enough or sufficiently specialised for serious mountain biking and the suspension forks are likely to be one of the weak areas. However, I'm sure it'll be fine (if slightly compromised) for normal road use with light off-road and track use. It'll be OK for 90% of potential users but the term 'mountain bike' is overused and potentially misleading for anyone seriously into the sport.

It's a £250 bike. It's a decent deal for what you are getting. I'm not sure why you have quoted on this post other than to bore people with your fast superior 'mountain bike ' knowledge. People are looking for decent deals for Christmas presents/cheaper bikes.

Your comment, taking into consideration the other comments before as well regarding the post, isn't justified or a proportionate response to the poster. It shows you to be a bore/ missing a link.

Heat from me.

My first contribution started with "Decent budget bike..." and I voted hot too!

What's getting you so hot under the collar: is everything in your world brilliant or awful with no room for anywhere between? I was answering a question posed by DannyBoy99 and most people with some knowledge of bikes would probably say that was good, balanced advice, ie it's good value but don't try using it as a REAL mountain bike. Some people ask questions on these threads looking for honest advice and, if it's an area where I think I can help, I try to offer the same. Unlike some people I don't post nonsense in areas I don't have some knowledge.

Actually, if someone wanted proper advice on a serious mountain bike my comments would be limited to saying this one won't do it and you'll have to spend a lot more. I'd let someone with more knowledge answer further. Riding on a towpath or across the local park is not mountain biking, but this bike will probably do that quite well without breaking the bank.

OK?

For the record I was quite happy with the response from @Besford and basically got what I asked for. @stella483 you should probably climb down off your high horse pal.

A £250 Carrera is what it is, it's a bike for the masses, personally I wouldn't buy one as I need far more reliability and quality for mountain biking. But as a do it all bike for kids then get it, far better than the Tesco/ Chinese bikes that have derailleur that are impossible to fine tune and you'll be getting slipped gearing from the off.

if you want a real mountain bike get a Santa Cruz or yeti, or a big USA player like giant or specialized, or a uk brand like bird, orange, whyte or cotic.

Is the go outdoors highly recommended Calibre two two much better then this anyone? Seems to have the best spec on paper then anything under £600

I would buy him the 16 inch frame as my boy is 6ft and 15 years old and is on the lowest seat size on a 20 inch frame. Its a great bike honestly.

Would the decathlon rock rider be a better option? I've been looking to start cycling the short distance to work rather than drive and can't stand road bikes as I'm an aggressive rider most of the time

Doesn't seem to be any 16 inch frames in stock near me. I could order home delivery as I could probably build it myself but I have 10% discount via work but only in store.

There is a Valour in stock how does that compare? Think I'd rather pay the extra £30 for the disc brakes alone.

Just been on web chat - they reckon stock is being replenished within next 5 days ...apparently!

I don't think your summary is fair at all. It's not a £250 bike in quality terms, it actually exceeds the specification of £400 bikes from companies like Specialized, GT etc which often have low end freewheels on their entry level bikes. I think it can be misleading to people. This is a real mountain bike fully capable of being taken off road without compromise. The front shocks aren't the best but are still strong. The frame meets the full recommended certification standard of 136kg/300lb rider weight limit and Carrera frames have a great reputation for being exceptionally strong and long lasting. This is not the case for many competing brands like btwin whose mountain bikes have a rider limit of 85kg or less and have a history of recalls. There is a lot of mis-information in these threads. Always look at the components fitted and make sure you know the full specification of the bike and frame. Check out the manual if necessary. Search forums and you will see Carrera bikes are a great budget option for real off-roading with many people more than happy with them. The logistics of Halfords buying directly from the factory and selling huge volumes in their stores means huge cost savings over many competing models who have more complicated logistics with many more parties requiring profit and large marketing and promotional expenses. Also look at the Go Outdoors Calibre range and if you are a light rider the btwin models. All 3 are direct from factory to retail store for their own brands.

Still no joy for me when I checked stock. But there is a notice online now saying 16" frames will be back in stock on Thursday, whether this means online only or ordered into store I don't know.

The hellcat has also been reduced to £250. Very nice looking bike but 29" wheels which I think would be too big for an 11 year old.

the deal is still valid, but frame size availability is limited:
- black frame: 18", 20" and 22"
- yellow frame: 20" and 22"

I’m 6ft1inch does anyone with experience know if a 20inch or 22inch

So the boy in Halfords had me sit on a 20inch frame with the seat at it's highest point. I could just about touch the ground. He then decides from that I should get a 22inch. The 20inch frame seemed big enough to me.

Complete novice at all this.

Original Poster

the bike price is back to £320

I believe that this model has been discontinued considering that only 20" and 22" frames are left. This suggests that clearance sale is coming after Christmas at £150 to £200 mark.
