Casio FX-85GT PLUS Calculator is always £10+ when I look in the supermarkets and today I saw it was £5.50 so I bought one. Not the lowest price ever but half price isn't bad.

Comes with protective hard case cover.
Recommended for GCSE, AS & A Level.
Always on with back-up power.
3 year guarantee.

Very good - Bought the FX83 today for £6 at Wilko..

This will take you to A Levels or through a BTEC without any issues! Obviously you need to be able to use it My students prefer this one to the Sharp models.

Always 6 quid and always available....if folk can't get one from Asda.

For some university courses these are the only ones they'll allow, and they're always expensive in union shops. Excellent deal

The 85 is with solar, 83 is without, but the battery probably lasts years anyway.

It's not the same product. It's a much newer edition.

...This one goes to 11.

Of course it depends on budget but the silver casio fx 991 es is a much better calculator for A Levels and in general terms for higher level Mathematics.

Equation solver, simpler quadratics, definite implicit differentiation and definite integration, complex numbers, matrices etc. The list goes in. It costs around £14 but we'll worth the extra. I would say it gives pupils who are prone to silly errors quite a few more marks in exams because it shows them that they have gone wrong somewhere (not always easy to spot given answers can be very unfriendly looking).

I haven't had an equipment list yet for my son who is due to start secondary in September - will he be needing a scientific calculator yet, please?

I don't understand what the difference between these calculators as they all look the same.

Yes he will and this will be ideal, number 2 son has another year to go before secondary, but am tempted to have a trip to asda.
Number one son actually got the fx83 from school for £8 when he started year 7 so this is a great deal.

Our son starts in September too. We were told a standard calculator would do for the first year, but a scientific one would be required in future years. I'm sure it varies between schools though. I'll probably pick this up for him though, with it being so cheap.

Tried to do a simple calculation with one last night and had to get my son to explain what was happening (result was 1000/27). Gave up and used the one on the phone.
