Castrol GTX 10w-40 four litre available in my local tesco petrol station for just £7.88.

The 2l was £10, and I spotted the 4l marked up as £12, so took it the till to pay, and it rung through at £7.88. Woman in there said it had been that price for a while.

Went back and picked up another at that price...

top bargain... hope it helps someone.

can anyone confirm?

Is this a semi-synthetic oil?

no its just mineral oil, you can get semi-syn for about £12 and fully for £17+ which imho is much better than good ole mineral oil

in modern cars u wanna put full syn in the car.

Unless you have a very old car that's not worth much, or you carry out very regular oil changes eg. everything 3000-6000 miles, using a mineral oil such as GTX really isn't that great for your engine. You'd be far far better spending another £15 and getting a good quality semi-synth or synthetic eg. Castrol Edge.

There's no need to go for fully synthetic in most cars, semi will do the job just fine. But I agree with other posts that mineral oil should be reserved for older cars.

fully synthetic is recomended by most for modern cars.
my 2000 astra need fully synthetic, but that edge s about £50 for 4litres

Keep a lookout for semi and fully synthetic in Tesco fuel stations as there prices vary even though they are attached to the main store and as usual every store price is different.

I need to pick up some semi-synthetic this weekend - where would you recommend looking for a 12 quid deal? Tesco petrol station?

I'm going to do an oil change on my mums Kia Picanto and think that "semi" should be good enough really but it's not a huge difference in cost really.

Turns out the Picanto only needs just under 3L of oil so I'll pick up some fully synthetic and to hell with the expense

I run the equivalent to an Audi TT run it with full syn because of long services but you can use semi syn but you need to have fixed services then. But my mechanic says to use semi syn because when the oil comes out after about 16-17k miles its like p...s :x
So i'm going to start using semi syn and oil change every 8-10k. Castrol has always been over priced and 4ltrs when my car takes 4.5ltrs so Castrol take the p...s most oil comes in 5 ltrs! You can buy 5ltrs of semi syn Quantum oil from your local Audi/VW dealer for about £12-14 if its good enough for there cars i'm sure its good enough for most others. :-D

But good price for a well over rated oil.

I assume your mechanic isn't an oil specialist?

What oil "looks like" when it comes out of the engine often does not relate to the lubricating properties.

As long as you are changing the oil at the recommended interval it'll be OK

No go in Morrisons or at the local Tesco petrol station for me anyway.

Any other ideas?
