Never buy a ceiling fan that does not show CFM rating (Cubic feet per minute), its how much air the fan moves, it does not matter on how many blades it has or how big the fan is.

My last fan had 4 blades, looked stylish and had a light was OK during winter but during the summer was still sweating as could not feel the air movement, CFM Rating 84.

The new fan I got after researching about air movement in fans has 3 blades brilliant in summer, sitting in front of PC typing this and i can feel the cool air been blown on me and it was hot today, CFM rate 174.

if you cannot find a CFM rating after googling that model don't buy it, you might be disappointed with its results.

All depends on wattage per cubic meter of air flow per minute (CFM) with ceiling fans as motors run on low RPM, around 200 to 300 RPM.

With tower fans low CFM but high RPM, around 1250 RPM or higher, small fans and higher motor, blowing air through vents in tower so more watts will be used but less air flow.

Tower fan is more noticeable cooling, plus cheaper to run on electricity.
Ceiling fans are just cooler looking though (pun intented)
Have both of mine on atm for heatwave.

Not sure about efficiency but for me most important was the space saving in the bedroom. Ceiling fan practically doesn’t need any space in the room unless some high wardrobes are near it or the ceiling is quite low. We have standard ceiling about 244 cm and it is installed more or less in the middle = no issues at all.

Thank you for this as I didn't realise the issue. I have a Westinghouse ceiling fan and have just checked the CFM rating which is 159 m³/Min. I guess it's not the best on the market but maybe average? Out of curiosity, is there a max CFM rating? I'm looking for a second ceiling fan with built in light for the bedroom. It's a large room that is approximately 7M x 8M. Any recommendations?

You mention the second fan being cheaper but much more efficient- it isn't, it actually moves slightly less air per watt than the first fan.

Generally for peak efficiency you want a fan to be as big as possible and turn as slow as possible - but there are a few caveats with that. Generally most ceiling fans will have much longer blades than any tower-type fan though, so they will almost always be much more efficient. The air velocities will be much slower and the moving air spread over a much larger area though - they're best suited to keeping a whole room feeling fresh (rather than stuffy), whereas a tower or desk fan might make you feel cooler if it's pointing right at you.

Any idea for the "visible fanless" tower fans that use Bernoulli's principle for increasing air flow, what's their CFM reading please. Those would avoid the need for electrician call out for fitting and total cost might be cheaper and air flow exactly where I want it rather than in centre of the room. Any recommendations on that front please.

You can run a fan in both directions. Blow down direction is good for the summer because you can feel the airflow. Suck up for the winter to distribute warm air up and round the room. You really need a big room to feel the benefit of fan assisted warm air distribution.

We got one in the bedroom which is a blessing on hot nights. If you want to save on the 50w for the fan, see if you can find one with a transformer built in. The fan effectiveness after all is all about length of blade and rpm, and how much air that pushes though.

Also, put the long stem on it if it offers a short stem/long stem choice, even if you have 2.25m ceilings. You need the gap for it to be effective.

For pitys sake fans do not cool the air the move it, unless the are the super duper type.

In reality a fan will warm the room as the heat generated by the motor has to go somewhere
Do any of these fans have a timer so you can set it to switch off automatically after an hour or two? Thinking about night time when you don't necessarily want it running through the whole night?
Diameter of swept area may be 48 inches not 48 inch blades.

With 48 inch blades and maximum from spec of 225 rpm the tips of the blades would be moving at 60 mph,

I think everyone knows that, it cools YOU down not the room also helps equalise room temp to avoid hot spots.

Didn't see anyone here claiming a fan cooks the room down at all. They cool people down very effectively. They're also excellent in winter in reverse at heating the room, Ooooh I said it lol not heating the room but pushing the hot air back down & mixing it with the cooler Sir makes a massive difference & can mean not putting the heating back on.

We've had ceiling fans for about 12 years now & couldn't go back. Moved house last year & got some fitted immediately. Had to go with wall mounted fan in a kids room due to cabin bed but our bedroom, other kids room & just done the living room next is dining room.

Love westinghouse when you can add the remote kit at a later date.

You can't run it in reverse if the room has a living flame gas fire, as you can draw the carbon monoxide back into the room. Just check up with a gas engineer or the like if it is the same for any type of gas fire,as we were told this by one when he installed our fire.

Then put a brighter bulb in it.
Wouldn't really recommend them in bedrooms on newer houses with lower ceiling heights, mine had them fitted and my head almost would hit off the light part. The light was also awful so got rid of them all. Would have been fine in my last house which was a victorian terrace, needed step ladders to get anywhere near the ceiling in that place.
