Just remember, when your kids come home from school saying "Gong Shee Fa Choi", the school have taught them to beg for money, NOT say "Happy New Year" in PuTongGua(Mandarin).

Gong Shee Fa Choi (various spellings, just go with how I spelt it for pronunciation) means "Give me (lucky), money".

Practically EVERY Google search result makes the same mistake.

(My wife is from Guangxi province, and I lived out there for a while).

No!!!! it does not mean "give me lucky money" at all!! You ARE spreading the wrong messages to everyone reading your post and killing the beautiful meaning of this festive greeting. First of all, you mixed the words "Gong shee fa choice" from two languages - Chinese and Cantonese. I am sorry, it's not a hybrid words and it never will be. Either you say "Gong Xi Fa Cai" (Chinese) or "Gong Hei Fa Choi" (Cantonese). In both languages, the first two words have congratulation meaning. The last two words have prosperity meaning. I think you need more Chinese lesson with your wife. Lol

Surely the egg fried rice is veggie? It's not a full meal but still something I guess..

The revues are dire, when you get past the unnatural glowing ones.

False information. Gong Xi Fa Chai, loosely translated, means Happy New Year.

When children do it to get ang pows (chinese red money packets), they're usually doing it for fun. Because chinese kids are usually taught to greet first before they get any ang pow money. And ang pow money is usually only given if you actually visit the house. You're not giving it to all and sundry as it's meant to bestow blessing and in a sense, give and get 'luck'.

I think it's vegetarian food but not vegan food. Because of the egg.

I've never tried to argue that with a vegan but you've given me ideas

I cringe more at all the Singaporean food dishes sold in the UK There's no such thing as Singapore Rice Noodles or Singapore Fried Rice. And most Singaporean dishes come from Malaysia anyway.

The point being homemade and a ready meal aren't going to taste the same. I'll have to trust your knowledge on roast dinner ready meals having a high turnover at Iceland though lol.

Try "sheen nian kwai luh" audio for Happy New Year

What you (and a lot of others) seem to forget is that Chinese isnt a literal language, so the individual words may mean one thing, but combined they mean something totally different, and even then - may have multiple interpretations.

My wife says her name means "Red Swan", but if you look at the possible meanings for each half of the word, it can also mean "Flying Fruit".

As for Iceland's effort at Chinese food, if it isnt full of bone lumps/splinters, and if you arent a little worried about EXACTLY what type of animal supplied the meat, it isnt authentic Chinese.
