I think this is a cracking initiative.

Millions of children across the world can't read, write or draw after sunset as they have no electricity. This obviously impacts on their education as they can't study of do homework once it gets dark.

For each solar powered SUNNAN lamp Ikea sell before the end of August, they'll donate another one to Unicef, on your behalf, for free.

Unicef will then give them to children without electricity in their homes.

From the site:

"Starting in June 2009, UNICEF receives one SUNNAN solar-powered lamp for every SUNNAN sold in IKEA stores worldwide. This will enable children in homes without electricity to do their homework even after dusk.

The first donations go to UNICEF in Pakistan, helping children in refugee camps and remote villages without electricity in two provinces. The province of Balochistan was struck by a major earthquake in October 2008, when thousands of people became homeless and several hundred schools were destroyed. In the North West Frontier province, unrest has affected half the population and displaced many thousands."

Eighteen quid might appear to be a lot of money for a desk lamp and you'd be right. However, when you consider that you'll also be changing the life of a child in the third world, improving their living conditions and helping their education then it suddenly becomes an absolute bargain!

It's also a very cool looking lamp and very bright!

Irespective of the price whats can be deemed hotter than a life?

Hmmm, I like the cut of your Jib Sir! I say HOT too. You can argue with me but you'd be wrong, I'd ignore you and I'm a nasty piece of work so I'd probably nail you..... Just vote Hot and lets all be friends.

Perhaps, but then this is £17.99 to get a lamp for yourself AND a donation thus increasing the chances of people putting their hands in their pockets.

Also have you not heard the expression (albeit mangled by me) "give a person rice and he eats for a day, teach him how to farm and he eats for life", this process is about raising education levels in countries less fortunate than our own.

It also highlights the issue of education when many still regard the issues as being food, water, healthcare.

Because you normally get ONE lamp for £17.99.

With this deal you are getting TWO. One for you and one that enables a child to read/draw/write after dusk.

It's simples, yes?

But the lamp that goes to UNICEF is free! So...you can either give £17.99 to UNICEF, a large percentage will then get swallowed in admin and what's left will go to someone that needs it..

-or-

You buy a lamp for £17.99 and Ikea give another £17.99 lamp to UNICEF.

It's basically a BOGOF exept the free one goes to a worthy cause.

whats the point of having one of these lamps yourself with the amount of sunlight we get inside our houses? Give £18 to unicef to bring far more benefit imho

UNICEF are an excellent charity with some of the best financial records amongst all charities.

The great thing about buying two of these lights is that a child or family will get a light. In many cases, that's better than money which can sometimes be appropriated or stolen for other purposes. At least with a light, it's a light and it'll go to bringing light in the dark for hopefully many years to come.
