'A grain in the balance will determine which individual shall live and which shall die...'. Darwin's theory of natural selection issued a profound challenge to orthodox thought and belief: no being or species has been specifically created; all are locked into a pitiless struggle for existence, with extinction looming for those not fitted for the task. Yet 'The Origin of the Species' (1859) is also a humane and inspirational vision of ecological interrelatedness, revealing the complex mutual interdependencies between animal and plant life, climate and physical environment, and - by implication - within the human world. Written for the general reader, in a style which combines the rigour of science with the subtlety of literature, 'The Origin of the Species' remains one of the founding documents of the modern age.

Oh dear. I fear this thread is doomed.:-D

Do I sense a pattern here?

this site is becoming more and more sacrilegious every day, and quite frankly I'm disgusted. Jesus died on the cross for all our sins and you guys repay his thoughtfulness with science and evidence? logic and reasoning?

disgraceful.

Thank god for Darwin inventing evolution or we'd still be monkeys.

Over to you SimpleX!

So the diappearing canoe-man has written a book eh? not sure we should be supporting this con-artist.

Darwin said that all living things came from a single cell and evolved. However , he did not provide a starting point for his theory. in addition to that current findings in fossils disprove what Darwin claimed about evolution . there was no single fossil that is half mammal and half lizard .

that's SO cool!

Woohoo, here come the loons!

Face it: this is the cornerstone of all modern bioology. There isn't a single serious academic in the field who disputes this.

What a joke! One thread after another on atheistic literature. And to top that, deals that aren't even hot deals keep getting posted up on the 'Hot' section. Do I detect an agenda?

Now let me guess what will happen? The atheists will claim that they have science on their side even though there are scientific arguments to support creationalism. The Christians argue their opinion and the atheists argue theirs. However, the Christians are narrow minded and ramming their beliefs down people's throats to fight their corner, while the atheists are free and liberal minded people who are simply providing intelligent information for defending their 'cause'.

Oh, and SimpleX will be hijacked before he even speaks, accused of preaching sermons and 'ramming it down our throats, simply because he is creating a rational argument contradicting Evolution.

This is nothing to do with atheism. It's a book on biology. The fact it disproves large chunks of religious mythology is a side-effect, not its purpose.

By the way, there are no serious scientific arguments for creationist thought. It's a purely religious theory, not evidence-based.

Errrrr..... Platypus ?

Lets get to the point here, I'm a christian and I know God exists, I don't need to push my views or tell you why. I know through my own beliefs that its true. Please don't judge me on this this is my views.

All I can say is most people on here only listen to one thing, thats the TV lol, so more fool you, if you want to know whats true go find out yourself don't let a someone else tell you.

Good deal on the book, thats what were here for. Voted hot.

:w00t: Where? May we see some proof please? I really am very interested!

I'm actually asking for the impossible as, according to Webster's New Collegiate Dictionary, the definition of science is "knowledge attained through study or practice," or "knowledge covering general truths of the operation of general laws, esp. as obtained and tested through scientific method [and] concerned with the physical world."

Old Albert said it best:

"The word god is for me nothing more than the expression and product of human weaknesses, the Bible a collection of honourable, but still primitive legends which are nevertheless pretty childish. No interpretation no matter how subtle can (for me) change this."

the platypus is a mammal , and the " duck bill but is actually an elongated snout covered with soft, moist, leathery skin and sensitive nerve endings"

Good price:thumbsup:
I have it already though...

Rather than the cheapest, can anyone recommend the best version of this book to buy? I would rather spend a little more for a decent quality reprint of the 1st edition. Sadly I can't afford a real 1st edition!

Its a great deal for the book Voted hot.

Although as others have said, if your buying it for reading then the text of this book is free on project gutenberg or the local library, and a lot of out of copyright books (along with other classics like Dickens) can be had for 2, 3 quid in bargain bookstores.

On the other hand for keepsake purposes I'd prefer scouring the second hand bookshops for a vintage, hardback bound copy If anything for the collectors factor.

Why are you guys 'fighting your corner' here, on a thread, on an internet bargains board? Shouldn't you guys be publishing all of your amazing "science" and "evidence" in a peer-reviewed journal, you know, like real scientists have to do? I very much look forward to seeing the "]magic man dunnit" theory on the cover of Nature soon, cheers.

You are correct in that it IS a mammal, but is thought of as an evolutionary "transition".

To explain it all would require too much typing. Suggest you watch David Attenborough documentary that was aired recently about evolution.
